This week, Mastercard is demoing a new technology that will let you tap to pay with a variety of different devices that you already carry with you. Contactless payments aren’t exactly brand new, but there’s currently a limited number of gadgets that let you tap to checkout in the US, including Apple Pay and Jawbone UP (which is currently limited to American Express).
With MasterCard’s new tech, you’ll be able to pay with “virtually anything” — according to the company’s Chief Emerging Payments Officer (CEPO?), you’ll theoretically be able to pay with “rings, fitness and smart bands, car key fobs, apparel, and whatever comes along next.”
Apparently Capital One is first to hop on board with MasterCard’s new program, called Digital Enablement Express (or “Express” for short), which should begin to support a variety of payment platforms as soon as next year. Besides Capital One’s cards, such as the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or Capital One Spark Miles for Business, points-earning MasterCards include Citi Prestige, Citi Premier Card and Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard, among others.
