Citi is Replacing Oddly Designed Premier and Prestige Cards

Roughly a year ago, Citi began shipping its Prestige Card with the magnetic stripe on the front instead of on the back. Then, earlier this year, new Citi Premier® Card began arriving with a similar design. The peculiar move certainly generated some buzz, and helped Citi differentiate its flagship cards from those of competitors — specifically because of the awkward way in which cashiers have to swipe it.
Unfortunately, the move was a bit less consumer (and cashier)-friendly than Citi had likely imagined. I used the physical card quite a bit while working my way to the minimum spend for the 50,000-point bonus, and every time I handed it over to a cashier, they had a difficult time figuring out how to swipe it, even after I gave a brief tutorial. Now, I primarily use Prestige for 4th Night Free bookings, so it gets swiped every other week at most.
Personally, that’s worked out fine, since I get more value out of using the Chase Sapphire Preferred card for dining expenses, which make up most of my in-person transactions, but it would still be nice to be able to hand over my Prestige card and have the transaction go through on the first swipe.
Fortunately, the weekend brought some great news on that front. Citi has finally moved the magnetic strip to the back of the card where it belongs! I called Citi this morning to confirm, and within a few minutes I had a new card on the way — it arrives tomorrow, with Citi picking up the tab for overnight shipping, just as it did when shipping my replacement card to Hawaii in August.
Overall, this might not seem like a huge change, but there’s no question that it’s a much-needed improvement to an otherwise fantastic product. Well done, Citi!
