ANA announced earlier this year that it would be adding a couple new liveries to its fleet, in honor of the upcoming Star Wars film later this year. The airline recently released a video showing the painting process, featuring ANA’s 787-9 Dreamliner. The Japanese airline has also flown Pokemon-themed liveries on a few of its planes in the past, though this plane seems to be the carrier’s biggest hit yet. ANA’s two pop-culture influenced designs each feature a character — one with R2D2 and a second featuring BB-8, a new character in the next installment of the series.
The 787-9 featuring R2D2 is set to operate flight NH116 between Tokyo and Vancouver, as well as other routes between Japan and international destinations such as Seattle, Paris and Sydney starting on October 18. The plane’s interior will also follow the Star Wars theme with special headset covers, cups and napkins, and even all six Star Wars movies available to watch using the in-flight entertainment system. The second design with BB-8 will be on two planes — a 767-300 flying domestically in Japan and a 777-300ER flying set to fly between Japan and Chicago, Houston and New York.
