American Airlines has recently taken delivery of their first new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, and plan its maiden voyage on Thursday, May 7 between Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) and Chicago-O’Hare (ORD). For about a month thereafter, the aircraft will be used on this domestic route in order to enable pilots and crew to become familiar with the satellite WiFi-equipped plane before using it on international routes like DFW-Beijing (PEK) (starting June 2) and DFW-Buenos Aires (EZE) (starting June 4).
American Airlines has currently ordered 42 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and reserved the right to another 58, for a possible total of 100. This year, American plans to take delivery of an average of two new aircraft per week as they continue to build a younger fleet of airplanes.
American’s Boeing 787 will feature a two-class cabin configuration with 28 lie-flat Business Class seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, meaning every seat will offer direct aisle access. Each Business Class passenger will have their own seat-back 15.4-inch HD Panasonic touchscreen monitor, AC power outlets and USB charging ports, as well as the use of Bose QuietComfort Acoustic Noise Canceling headphones. They’ll also have access to a walk-up bar stocked with a selection of in-flight snacks and refreshments.
In the Main Cabin, the aircraft will feature 48 Main Cabin Extra seats in a 3-3-3 configuration, and 150 Main Cabin seats will also be arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration. In the Main Cabin, passengers can enjoy 9-inch HD Panasonic touchscreen monitors with an assortment of movies, TV shows and games, as well as at-seat AC power outlets and a USB jack.
Andrew Nocella, American’s chief marketing officer, explains that, “Adding the 787 Dreamliner to our network gives us the opportunity to increase our efficiency on long-haul flights across the globe and potentially open up new markets in our network.”
For those wondering how to book on the Dreamliner, flights will be available for purchase starting this Saturday, February 14. I can hardly wait to try out American’s new Boeing 787 aircraft!
