Getting to Europe for under $500 roundtrip these days can be nearly impossible and usually requires flying a wonky carrier (like WOW Air) via Iceland or hoping for a mega-mistake from an airline (ah, hem Etihad). However, today Emirates announced a Valentine’s day fare sale for $799 total roundtrip from JFK-Milan on their non-stop service, which comes to just $399 total per person (for all those math challenged, thats $399 total roundtrip per person).

You need to book for two to get the fare and only certain dates have availability, but there seems to a ton of dates with availability. But book soon, I don’t expect inventory to last forever! Book at and select two passengers to see available dates and it looks like the latest departure to be eligible is May 10, 2015.

These fares are discounted economy, so they earn 50% of Skywards miles (3,750 for the roundtrip), but they good news is they are upgrade eligible, but you need to wait until check-in for availability. If you need Skywards miles, they are a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards (program of the Amex Platinum and Premier Rewards Gold cards) as well as Starwood Preferred Guest.

They’re also offering $4,999 for two in business class (which I flew last summer on this route and quite enjoyed).

These business class fares earn 9,376 Skywards Miles each and should be upgradeable, but I can’t find the exact restrictions, so if you want to test out first class, I’d recommend calling for eligibility of mileage upgrades.

First class will cost you a cool $7,999 for two, but since this is the 777, I don’t think I’d splurge for first, because you won’t get the cool shower experience of the A380.

Per Emirates “You may request a refund on this itinerary within 24 hours of booking without penalty, as per US Department of Transportation guidelines, for those itineraries including flights to, from or within the USA. This can be done on the Help Centre on”, so if you see dates that work, I’d recommend booking now and finalizing your plans within the next day. As with all good deals, this won’t last forever!

United is matching this deal with EWR-MXP for $425 per person (for 2).

Per this Flyertalk post, United Airlines is matching these fares, so if you’re interested in booking on United that is another option.

Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express

With some great bonus categories and an annual fee that’s waived for the first year, the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card has a lot going for it. If you don’t have PRG, now’s as good a time as any to add it to your wallet, as Amex added some great new benefits several months back.
