Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available – The Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card from American Express
Currently, American Express is running a targeted promotion where you can earn double American Express Membership Rewards points for shopping at participating businesses with your Amex Everyday card and the Amex Everyday Preferred card.
If you’ve been targeted for the promotion, you should have received an email, but even if not you can still try to register here and see if it works–it’s worth a shot.
If you do qualify for the promotion, you can shop until January 31, 2015 and get your double points. Keep in mind that the language in the terms and conditions regarding gas and grocery purchases is a little sticky, so read on to make sure you have it clear.
The terms state that when the 20% and 50% extra points benefit is calculated, the extra points earned through this promo will not be included.
Regarding grocery store purchases, “For each dollar of purchases made during the Promotional Period at US Supermarkets that are also qualifying small business locations, enrolled Card Members will earn one additional Membership Reward point for each dollar of eligible purchases (for a total of three points for Amex EveryDay Cards, and four points for Amex EveryDay Preferred Cards)”.
As far as gas station purchases go, these transactions don’t count for additional points even if the gas stations appear on the Shop Small map as a participating location.
In any case, I am a fan of the Everyday Amex cards, in general I think they are great starter cards for Membership Rewards to have and I plan to use them as much as possible during this promo at participating locations because I also like the idea of supporting local and small businesses. I also value my membership rewards points at about 1.9 cents per dollar as per my November monthly valuation, so getting double points is a good opportunity to continue earning.
Welcome to The Points Guy!
