American Express is offering bonus Membership Rewards points to targeted cardholders for purchases made at restaurants in the U.S. through the end of 2014 (promotion landing page). For each dollar you spend, you’ll earn 2 bonus points in addition to the points you normally earn, for a total of 3 points per dollar spent at U.S. restaurants. I was not eligible for the promotion, but it only takes a minute to try, so it can’t hurt!
You can earn a maximum of 10,000 bonus points through this promotion, which will be credited to your account within 6-8 weeks after the charges appear on your account. I value Membership Rewards points at 1.8 cents apiece, so if you max out this promotion, you could earn an extra $180 or so in value.
Any American Express credit card that earns Membership Rewards is potentially eligible, including the Amex Platinum Card, the Premier Rewards Gold Card, and the Everyday Preferred Card, among others. Check out TPG Contributor Eric Rosen’s recent post comparing the benefits and earning potential of these three cards.
Again, this offer is targeted, so not everyone will be able to take part, but it’s worth a shot to see if your account is eligible even if you didn’t receive an email invitation. To sign up, visit the page for this promotion on the Amex website and try to enroll.
