Uber is one of my all-time favorite travel apps since it makes catching a car ride convenient in cities all over the world without the hassle of taxis. Though some fares are more expensive than taxis, Uber just lowered fares for its hybrid/smaller car UberX service in 16 cities, making them as cheap or cheaper than taxis in many cases.

Uber also just announced a promo for New York and New Jersey-based members where you can get up to two free rides of up to $20 each in value to, from or within New Jersey. If you go above that amount, the fare difference will be charged to the credit card you have on file. There is a $20 surcharge to go to/from New York to New Jersey, so this credit will pretty much just take care of that. However, when you sign up through my referral link, you get $20 in free credits off your first ride through February, so you can cover a lot of ground for free!

For the NJ promo, you can ride between noon on Friday (2/7) through 11:59PM on Sunday (2/9). When making your reservation, enter promo code NJLOVESuberX in the Uber app. Slide the car type selector to ‘uberX’ - this promotion does not apply to uberT, UberBLACK, or UberSUV - and then book your trip.

Uber has also partnered with NJ businesses to offer riders specials this weekend. You just have to show your UberX receipt to get in on the following deals at the following merchants:

Brewshot - free biscotti

CKO Kickboxing – first class free (boxing gloves required) OR starter package for $29.99 (includes 3 classes + gloves, normally $90)

Hazel Baby - free gift with purchase

Hound About Town - free gift with purchase

Maximum Motion Fitness - free fitness class (choice of three) OR one free personal training session

MODCUP - free coffee brewing and sampling technique class with free sample flight (10am Saturday, Feb. 8)

Northern Soul - 2 for 1 beer or wine

Razza Pizza Artiginale - 50% off all drinks

Roman Nose - 2 for 1 draft beer

The Hamilton Inn - free dessert with order of entrée

Union Republic - free coffee or agua fresca

Village Pourhouse - free order of wings

Wings, wine and even kickboxing - what's not to love?

You can also get an additional $20 off an UberX or Uber Black ride with the promo code KALEB. Once you sign up for Uber and are logged into your account, go to the promotions tab and add in the code KALEB. This promo is valid in the US only until August 2015.

As I mentioned, I love Uber because of the convenience, which adds a lot of value in my opinion. I also love that Uber makes it easy from an accounting perspective, because all ride receipts are automatically billed to the credit card on file so no haggling with stubborn drivers about whether they accept credit cards, and you can include tip and everything. I personally use my Sapphire Preferred because Uber counts as a travel merchant, so I earn 2.14x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent, and the and receipts are emailed to me automatically, so I don't have to worry about losing receipts. All in all, it's a great service, and if I were in New York this weekend, I'd think about taking a trip out to Jersey to take advantage of this deal and the discounts.
