Sample flights
Many major U.S. airports have discounted flights to Milan, with airports in Boston and Washington offering the cheapest available flights.
Here are some flights that stood out to us:
- Delta: Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), starting at $445 (includes a layover in New York).
- Delta: Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to MXP, starting at $445 (includes a layover in New York).
- American and Delta: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) to MXP, starting at $445 (includes a layover in New York).
- Delta and TAP: San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to MXP, starting at $445 (the Delta flight includes a layover in New York, while the TAP one has a layover in Lisbon, Portugal).
- United: Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to MXP, starting at $459.
- Scandinavian: O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to MXP, starting at $486 (includes a layover in Copenhagen).
- Delta: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to MXP, starting at $574 (includes a layover in New York).
We recommend searching for your ideal dates with Google Flights and then booking your flights on the airline's website since airlines are more reliable in the event of a cancellation, delay or booking change.
If you were planning to spend your Thanksgiving abroad and fly out of Seattle, Google Flights shows a 7:20 a.m. Delta Air Lines flight as the cheapest available option. The flight also includes a layover at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
As for returning flights, Delta has two options: One departs at 10 a.m. and the other at 11:30 a.m. The returning flights also have the same layover in JFK.
The cheap fares in these deals only extend to basic economy, which can feel restrictive, especially for longer international flights.
Delta's basic economy does not allow for ticket changes or seat selection. Passengers can bring one free carry-on, and checked baggage costs $150 round trip.
You can also book your flights to Milan through KLM, since Delta and KLM are both members of the SkyTeam alliance.
Despite the restrictions with a basic economy fare, you still save on airfare with these flights. Typically, flights to Milan from Seattle cost anywhere from $750 to $1,950, according to Google Flights.
Maximize your purchase
Use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, like The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points per dollar on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year), Citi Prestige® Card (5 points per dollar on airfare), Citi Premier® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve (3 points per dollar on airfare), American Express® Gold Card (3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel) or the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (2 points per dollar on travel). See this post for more on maximizing airfare purchases.

Bottom line
If you want to visit Italy without shelling out a ton of money, these deals are a more affordable option. Fares to Italy can cost around an average of $950, and these flights are marked down by almost 50%.
Even though basic economy is restrictive and not the most comfortable option for longer international flights, it's still worth booking, considering how much you can save on airfare.
You can save that money on airfare and put it toward a nicer hotel or perhaps a shopping spree in the city known as the world's fashion capital.
