American’s been flying the Dreamliner for quite some time now, but that’s the 787-8 — the airline’s latest plane, the 787-9, is an entirely different beast. The airline just took possession of its first 787-9, which is being used for domestic service until its international launch later this year, and an AA rep managed to snap a couple pics, which they’ve sent over for us to share with you.

The big news with this particular plane is the new premium-economy cabin, which you can see below. These seats are similar to what you’ll find in domestic first class — they’re hardly the most luxurious premium-economy seats you can fly, but they’re still a big step up from regular coach. Premium-economy seats are arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration, rather than the 3-3-3 you’ll find back in coach.

The 787-9 Dreamliner also features AA’s latest business-class seat, which we first saw back in May. These lie-flat seats are arranged in a roomy 1-2-1 configuration, but you might not find them as comfy (or private) as what the airline operates on its 777-300ER.

American won’t begin selling its premium-economy seats until next year, but in the meantime, top AA elites will be able to book a regular coach seat and select one in the premium-economy cabin (based on availability) for free. Other customers may be able to “upgrade” by selecting a Main Cabin Extra seat for a fee.
