Earning points and miles via the traditional method (actually flying or staying in hotels) is just one way to boost your account balance. Fortunately airlines make it relatively easy to accrue miles without flying, whether through top credit card offers or by utilizing shopping portals. You can also purchase miles directly from an airline, and on the heels of United’s new promotion that offers you a bonus of up to 85% when you purchase miles, Hilton has just announced a similar offer to purchase HHonors points.
Here’s how this works: Through December 15, you’ll earn a mystery discount of up to 50% when you buy Hilton HHonors points. Unfortunately, you won’t know which bonus you’re targeted for until you log in here. The base discount is 30%, but you may be targeted for 35%, 40%, 45% or 50% off the regular price ($10 for 1,000 points). Regardless of the bonus you receive, this promotion does offer a decent discount off the usual purchase price of 1 cent per point. Just be sure to crunch the numbers and make sure you are getting solid value.
Here’s how to take advantage of the promotion:
- Click on Hilton’s Buy Points link.
- Log in to your Hilton HHonors account.
- Select the number of points you want to purchase (your name, account number and e-mail address should be pre-poulated) and click Continue.
- Enter your credit card information and billing address and click Continue.
- Confirm the details, check the box to agree to the Terms and Conditions and click Buy Now.
Keep in mind that the usual restrictions for purchasing Hilton HHonors points apply to these transactions, including:
- You must have a positive account balance and have been active in the program within the last 30 days.
- You can purchase points in increments of 1,000 points up to a maximum of 80,000 points per transaction and 80,000 points per account per calendar year.
- The points will post within 24 hours and do not count toward earning Hilton HHonors elite status.
Is This Worth It?
In TPG’s most recent valuations, he pegs Hilton points at 0.5 cents apiece, but there are definitely ways to get significantly more value out of the program. If you’re targeted for the 50% discount and max out the promotion, you’ll take home 80,000 points at a cost of $400, which equals TPG’s valuation of 0.5 cents per point. Through the promotion, you’re looking at a free night at a Category 9 hotel (like the Conrad Hong Kong) for $400 per night, which can be a great deal during peak periods.
As always, be sure to crunch the numbers to make sure that you’re getting more value out of the redemption than you’d spend purchasing the miles. For more information, be sure to check out Richard Kerr’s Award Traveler’s Guide to Hilton HHonors.
Remember too that there are many other ways to boost your Hilton HHonors account balance (or earn free night certificates). For example, the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card currently offers you two free weekend nights at participating hotels and resorts within the Hilton portfolio after making $2,500 in purchases within the first four months after account opening. It also includes automatic Gold status and some decent bonus spending categories.
Hilton is also the only hotel transfer partner of the Citi ThankYou program, so you can move points earned on cards like the Citi ThankYou Premier Card to Hilton HHonors. The two programs are even offering a 33% transfer bonus through January 6, 2016, though this isn’t a great way to redeem ThankYou points for maximum value.
This promotion likely isn’t for everyone, but if you have a specific redemption in mind, it could make sense to take advantage of it. Just remember that Hilton HHonors underwent a massive devaluation back in 2013, so you should definitely check the program’s standard room rewards price tool to make sure you know how many points you’ll need for your redemption.
What discount did you receive? Will you be taking advantage of this new promotion?
This card’s sign-up bonus of two free nights can be worth as much as 190,000 points if you redeem them at top-tier properties like the Conrad Maldives, and it also confers automatic Gold status and the ability to earn Diamond status through spending.
