Earning points and miles via the traditional method (actually flying or staying in hotels) is just one way to boost your account balance. Fortunately, travel providers make it relatively easy to accrue points and miles without traveling, whether through top credit card offers or by utilizing shopping portals. You can also purchase miles directly, and on the heels of promotions from United, Alaska, Hyatt and Hilton, Starwood Preferred Guest has just announced a similar offer to purchase points with a bonus.

Note that while Starwood will be acquired by Marriott in the middle of next year, Starpoints will likely remain just as valuable until after the sale is complete, and likely for quite a while following the transaction as well.

This promotion can put luxurious properties like the Westin Excelsior in Florence within reach.

Here’s how it works: From now through December 31, you’ll earn a discount of up to 25% when you buy or gift Starwood Preferred Guest points. The bonus is tiered based on how many points you purchase:

  • Get 10% off 5,000–9,500 Starpoints
  • Get 15% off 10,000–14,500 Starpoints
  • Get 20% off 15,000–19,500 Starpoints
  • Get 25% off 20,000 Starpoints

The bonus should automatically appear when you visit the program’s site for purchasing or giving points. The usual price for buying or gifting points is 3.5 cents apiece ($17.50 for 500 Starpoints), so the promotion does offer a decent discount. Here’s a table that breaks down the discounts you get at the low and high end of each range:

  • You can purchase points in increments of 500 points up to a maximum of 20,000 points per account/calendar year.
  • The points will post within 48 hours but do not count toward earning Starwood Preferred Guest elite status.

If you have a specific redemption in mind, it could make sense to utilize this promotion.

Is this worth it?

In TPG’s most recent valuations, he pegs SPG points at 2.5 cents apiece, so if you purchase the full 20,000 points, this promotion actually brings your purchase price very close to this amount. 20,000 Starpoints is enough for a Category 6 hotel (like the St. Regis Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi), so through this promotion, you’re looking at “buying” a free stay for $525 per night. This may not be the best value, so be sure to crunch the numbers to make sure that you are getting more value out of the redemption than you’d spend purchasing the miles. For more information, be sure to check out Richard Kerr’s Award Traveler’s Guide to Starwood Preferred Guest.

Remember too that there are many other ways to boost your SPG account balance. For example, the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express currently offers you 25,000 bonus Starpoints after you use your new card to make $3,000 in purchases within the first three months. The program is also a transfer partner of Membership Rewards, though you’ll only get 333 Starpoints for every 1,000 points transferred.

An award stay at the St. Regis New York can make this promotion worthwhile, but be sure to crunch the numbers to make sure it makes sense.

Bottom Line

This promotion likely isn’t for everyone, but if you have a specific redemption in mind, it could make sense to take advantage of it. I’ve gotten a lot of value out of the Starwood Preferred Guest program (through redemptions like the Equinox Resort & Spa in Vermont and the St. Regis Bal Harbour), though I don’t have any pressing need to boost my account balance so I’ll likely pass on this offer.
