Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend that you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency, such as Orbitz, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to travel.

Update: If you’re thinking about taking advantage of this deal, keep in mind that Americans need a visa to enter Kenya. However, for a limited time, Allied Passport is offering a service fee waiver to TPG Readers applying for a Kenyan visa until January 1, 2016. To receive the discount, simply enter “The Points Guy” in the Referred By field.

It’s not too often that we come across cheap flights to Africa from the US, but lately it’s been a great time for Africa-bound East Coasters. Last week, travelers originating in New York and Washington, D.C. could get nonstop flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town for under $600, and today there are more great opportunities from those US gateways, with discounted flights to Nairobi, Kenya (NBO).

The specific details, including carrier, flight routes and times vary quite a bit between travel dates, so be aware of what you’re booking before you check out. This is especially true of connecting times on the return trip to D.C., which could be as long as a full day. Some of the flight options include three shorter flights with quick connections between segments, or two segments with one long connection between. Regardless of how you book your itinerary, you should be able to minimize either flight segments or connection time.
