Last month, American Express announced the return of an increased sign-up bonus on both the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express and the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express. For a limited time, you can earn 30,000 Starpoints after spending $3,000 in purchases within the first three months (or $5,000 on the business version). This sign-up bonus alone is worth $750 based on TPG’s most recent valuations. However, this offer is only around until Monday September 14th, so if you haven’t applied yet, you only have a few more days to take advantage!

The increased sign-up bonus on the SPG Amex can open up valuable redemptions like the St. Regis Princeville.

Here’s a quick overview of the benefits on each card (many of which were just added):

The Westin Excelsior in Florence
You could redeem your sign-up bonus at the Westin Excelsior in Florence, situated right on the Arno River.

Another nice benefit on the cards is the 2 stay credits and 5 night credits you’ll earn toward elite status each year, and since this happens on a calendar year basis, you’ll actually earn them now and again at the beginning of January. In addition, if you spend $30,000 on the card in a calendar year, you’ll earn an automatic upgrade to SPG Gold and unlock some valuable benefits like bonus points, late check-out, “enhanced” rooms at check-in and a welcome amenity. Gold status will also get you access to the Crossover Rewards program, which gives you additional Starpoints when you fly on qualifying paid Delta flights.

The Starwood Preferred Guest program has a wide variety of valuable redemptions at both luxurious resorts and lower-tier properties around the world. I loved my stay at the St. Regis Bal Harbour last fall, and TPG has had several terrific stays at SPG properties in the last year, including the Westin Paris – Vendôme and the St. Regis Princeville. I’m also looking forward to my upcoming stay at the Equinox Resort & Spa in Vermont over Columbus Day weekend (review to follow). Paid rates for my stay were $988.90 per night, giving me a stunning value of 8.2 cents per point!

The SPG Amex isn’t just rewarding when it comes to hotel stays. You also have the ability to transfer points to 34 different airline partners (Korean Air was the most recent addition just last month) and will receive an extra 5,000 miles for every 20,000 Starpoints you transfer in a single transaction. This opens up a variety of redemption possibilities and is a primary reason why TPG recommends this card for everyday non-bonus category spending.

Who is eligible?

Unfortunately, if you’re like me and have had one of these cards in the past, you likely won’t be eligible to earn the sign-up bonus. The application page for both the personal and business versions of the card includes the following language:

“Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

This has become standard policy with American Express cards since May 1, 2014, when the issuer stopped allowing multiple sign-up bonuses on the same card. However, if you’ve only had the personal card and want to apply for the business version, you shouldn’t have any problem earning the sign-up bonus again. Just make the redemption count, since you won’t be able to take home that easy haul of points again!

If you want to take advantage of the increased sign-up bonus on the SPG Amex, the clock is ticking!

Bottom Line

This card represents a powerful value proposition, and the new benefits even led TPG to pay for an international hotel stay with the card for the first time! The card also made the Top 3 on my list of best starter cards for new points and miles enthusiasts (and is also a great option if you are mostly interested in free flights). However, you only have until this coming Monday to take advantage of the limited-time offer, so be sure to get your applications in soon!
