It must be hotel promo day, because both Marriott and Hilton have announced the details of their Fall 2015 promos. Hilton’s latest offer looks a lot like past promotions, including this one from 2012 and this one from 2013.
If you register here prior to check-out during your first stay, and from September 1-December 31, 2015, you’ll earn double or triple points on your stay, calculated for each night as follows:
- Earn double points on Monday-Thursday nights
- Earn triple points Friday-Sunday nights
Per the FAQ/terms, the double and triple points you earn are bonus points that are calculated off the base points you earn on your stay, which is 10 points per $1 at most Hilton properties, regardless of your HHonors double-dipping preference or elite status.
To put it in perspective, though, if you’re just a regular Hilton HHonors member with Points + Points selected as your double-dip earning preference, instead of earning 15 points per $1, you’ll earn 25 points per $1 on weekday nights and 35 points per $1 on weekend nights. I value Hilton HHonors points at about 0.5 cents apiece, so I would peg the return on your spending at 12.5% for weekdays and 17.5% on weekends. That’s pretty good!
However, the calculus by which those bonus points are calculated is a bit complicated. Rather than simply earning bonus points night by night, Hilton will take your average nightly folio (the room rate of all the nights added up and then divided by the total of nights) and calculate the bonus based on that – 2x for weekdays and 3x for weekend nights.
So let’s say you have a two-night stay Thursday-Friday and pay $150 for the room Thursday but $300 on Friday. You might expect to earn 3,000 points for Thursday night and 9,000 points for Friday for a total of 12,000 points. But instead, Hilton will calculate your average nightly rate as $225 ($450 divided by two) and give you 4,500 points for Thursday night and 6,750 points for Friday night for a total of 11,250 points. While 750 points might not seem like much, if you have a lot of stays, or longer stays where certain nights are a lot cheaper than others, this can really impact your bottom line.
On the positive side, all Hilton properties seem to be participating this time around. Members can also receive credit for up to two rooms per reservation, so keep that in mind if you’re traveling with family or friends.
When I registered, I also got the following offer:
So that’s an extra 2,000 bonus points on my first stay during the promo period as well.
All in all, this is a pretty positive promotion from Hilton. Earning double or triple points presents a great potential opportunity to rack up points and award stays a lot faster, and the fact that all properties are participating makes it much easier to plan your stays.
The fact that you can earn at least 35 points per $1 on weekend stays is pretty fantastic, and if you have a Hilton credit card like the Hilton HHonors Surpass card from Amex or the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve, you’re earning even more.
