In July, Hyatt was offering an opportunity to earn a 40% bonus on purchased points. Unfortunately that deal expired on July 31, and it was only available to elite members. This latest offer, however, while not quite as lucrative as last month’s, is open to all Hyatt Gold Passport members. Through August 31, you can earn a 30% bonus when you purchase 5,000 points or more.

Here’s the scoop:

  • Purchase at least 5,000 points to earn a 30% bonus
  • You can buy a maximum of 55,000 points per Hyatt Gold Passport account
  • Points cannot be gifted
  • Purchase must be completed by 11:59 pm ET on August 31, 2015

You can also earn an easy 40,000 Hyatt points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You can earn 40,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4,000 within the first three months, which you can then transfer instantly to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio.

Should You Buy?

If you max out the promo by purchasing 55,000 points, you’ll receive a total of 71,500 points for $1,320. Taking into account the 30% bonus, you’d be paying 1.85 cents per point with this offer. TPG’s latest monthly valuations list Hyatt points at 1.8 cents apiece, so unfortunately you’ll have to shell out a bit more than what you could reasonably consider face value.

Here’s a list of two properties where redeeming purchased points could make sense, however:

Hyatt's top-tier elite benefits at properties like the Andaz Maui are quite valuable
The Andaz Maui adds a great option for redeeming points in Hawaii.

Andaz Maui

One of the top rated hotels in Maui, this resort opened in September of 2013. It’s located on 15 acres of pristine beachfront property in Wailea, with a total of 290 guest rooms and suites. TPG visited this property earlier in the year and a had a great experience. This is a Category 6 property, requiring 25,000 points for a free night. Paid rates this month at $514 a night, giving you a value of 2.1 cents per point, making this a decent option for redeeming points earned as part of this purchase bonus.

The newly-refurbished Park Hyatt is located on Sydney's historic The Rocks area.
The Park Hyatt Sydney is located in the city’s historic The Rocks area.

Park Hyatt Sydney

Often considered the most luxurious property in Sydney, the Park Hyatt is located just below the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with views of the city’s world-famous opera house. With only 155 rooms, the hotel feels much more like a luxurious residence than a chain hotel. TPG reviewed this property last year as part of his first trip to Australia. This is a Category 7 property, requiring 30,000 points for a free night. Expect to spend $685 or more per weeknight in August, giving you a value of 2.3 cents per point, or 0.5 cents more than you’d be paying for them as part of this promo.
