TPG reader Sara messaged me to ask about my experience with hotel upgrades:

“What’s the best suite you’ve ever received as a complimentary upgrade? I got upgraded to the Presidential Suite at the Sheraton San Diego last week, and was wondering if you’ve had similar upgrades in the past?”

I’ve had elite status from many major hotel programs, so I’ve had some amazing upgrade experiences. Lately, I’ve been focused on Starwoood, and have been an SPG Platinum member for years, ensuring a lot of awesome upgrades.

The Presidential Suite at the Sheraton Austin

One of my favorites was a recent one in Austin, Texas during SXSW at the Sheraton Austin, when I got upgraded to the Presidential Suite. While it’s not the swankiest of suites like a St. Regis might have, it was huge, and I was really surprised to get that during a busy festival weekend.

Another of my favorite upgrades was about six years back when I was SPG Gold. I was staying at the Westin Bristol Place Toronto airport during a work trip, and I got upgraded to a huge suite with an outdoor patio, which was awesome for watching planes take off and land. However, it was about 10 degrees outside, so I didn’t end up watching for long. Still, I remember being so excited that I had received such a great upgrade as a Gold member, so thank you to the Westin Toronto!

What’s your most memorable upgrade? I would love to hit up some of these extra-generous hotels in the future, so please share in the comments section below.
