Now through August 24, Aeroplan is running one of its periodic partner point conversion bonuses where Aeroplan members can earn up to 40,000 bonus miles by transferring points from partner loyalty accounts into their Aeroplan accounts. You can find all the details at this promo page.
How the Bonus Works
As usual, the bonus is tiered – the more points you convert, the more bonus miles you’ll receive. When you convert enough points to create the following amount of Aeroplan miles, here are the bonuses you earn:
5,000 miles – 1,000 bonus
10,000 miles – 2,000 bonus
20,000 miles – 4,000 bonus
50,000 miles – 10,000 bonus
100,000 miles – 25,000 bonus
150,000 miles – 40,000 bonus
Participating transfer partners include:
- Starwood Preferred Guest
- Marriott Rewards
- Hilton HHonors
- Club Carlson
- Best Western Rewards
- Wyndham Rewards
- Accor AClub
- Choice Privileges
- Coast Rewards
- Golden Circle Award (Shangri-La Hotels)
- Points.com (note that only exchanges are eligible for the bonus but not points trades with other members)
Unfortunately, as usual, one of Aeroplan’s major transfer partners, American Express Membership Rewards (the points program of cards such as the Platinum, Premier Rewards Gold and EveryDay Preferred cards) is not participating.
Also note that, per the terms and conditions, a maximum of 40,000 bonus points can be earned per Aeroplan member and some transfers could take up to 4 weeks.
Before you go converting all your points to Aeroplan with the hopes of booking Star Alliance awards all over the place, remember that Aeroplan charges huge fees on many partner awards, so check out our series on Aeroplan award taxes and fees before you start strategizing.
With that in mind, there are a couple of scenarios in which this conversion bonus might be worth it to you. Aeroplan devalued its award chart last January, with redemption levels increasing by about 20% on flights from Canada and the continental US to Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Australia/New Zealand/South Pacific. Here’s the chart:
As a reminder, if you were to transfer is Starpoints to Aeroplan, you’d be earning a 5,000 bonus for every 20,000 SPG points transferred in, meaning that if you were to transfer in 150,000 Starpoints, you’d get the 40,000 Aeroplan bonus plus 35,000 bonus miles from Starwood for a total of 225,000 Aeroplan miles.
TPG recently 62,500 Aeroplan miles and $455 for Lufthansa 747-8 First Class from Washington Dulles to Frankfurt, which you can read about in his review here.
