Here’s a roundup of the week’s points, miles and travel industry news you may have missed:
American AAdvantage Increasing Award Costs for Peak Travel Dates
American Airlines has decided to raise the number of miles needed for standard award tickets on four of the busiest days of the year. The exact dates haven’t been announced, but my guess would be holiday dates like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and around Christmas. This increase will only apply to standard awards, so MileSAAver awards should be untouched. The change should take place in August 2015, so if you plan to use your AAdvantage miles to book awards on peak dates, do it soon to avoid the higher prices. (H/T: One Mile at a Time.)
Gogo Inflight Wi-Fi Coming to GOL Airlines
GOL’s entire fleet (approximately 140 planes) will be equipped with Gogo Wi-Fi by the middle of 2016. The planes will feature Gogo’s next generation satellite service (called 2Ku), plus Gogo’s wireless in-flight entertainment system Gogo Vision and Gogo TV. GOL will be the first Brazilian airline to offer broadband Internet access to its passengers.
Jet Airways Partners with Vietnam Airlines
Jet Airways has added its 25th partner, Vietnam Airlines. As of June 12, 2015, JetPrivilege members flying on qualifying Vietnam Airlines flights will earn JPMiles based on their destination and class of travel, and can also redeem JPMiles on Vietnam Airlines flights.
Turkish Airlines Adds New Service Between Atlanta (ATL) and Istanbul (IST)
Turkish Airlines is adding a nonstop Istanbul-Atlanta route on May 16, 2016. The airline recently launched nonstop flights between Istanbul and San Francisco in April, 2015, and announced plans for nonstop flights between Istanbul and Miami to begin in October 2015, so that’s three nonstop US routes that Turkish will be launching within a year. The Altanta-Istanbul flights will operate daily on a Boeing 777-300ER in a two-cabin configuration.
