IHG Rewards is offering a 100% bonus when you purchase up to 120,000 points through June 30, 2015. If you were to max out this promotion, you would be receiving 120,000 points for a cost of $690, which comes to .575 cents per point.
Points can be purchased in increments of 1,000 at the following rates:
- 1,000-10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points;
- 11,000 – 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points;
- 26,000 – 60,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points.
TPG values IHG points at 0.7 cents apiece, so you’ll actually be getting these points below market value, meaning it’s not a bad deal if you’re looking to top up your account. You’ll easily get great value buy redeeming for IHG PointBreaks (which offers rooms at select properties for just 5,000 points per night) or by redeeming at top IHG properties such as the Intercontinental Hong Kong.
Reminder: You can buy IHG points for 0.7 cents apiece by just making a Points & Cash reservation, which you then cancel. The cash portion is then refunded to you in the form of points, which you’ve effectively purchased at 0.7 cents apiece (or 0.63 cents with the 10% redemption rebate given to those who have the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card from Chase). However, note that this is frowned upon by IHG.
If you’re looking for an even easier way to earn miles, we’d recommend the IHG Rewards Card, with a current sign-up bonus of 60,000 points after you spend $1,000 in the first three months. With a high sign-up bonus and relatively low spending requirement, this card makes sense for anyone interested in IHG properties.
Heres are two IHG properties that offer a great value:
Hong Kong is known for world-class hotels with fantastic amenities, and the InterContinental Hong Kong is no exception. Located on the water in Kowloon, the property offers guests fantastic views of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island. Standard rooms include marble bathrooms with sunken tubs and separate showers.
This is a Category 9 property, requiring 50,000 points for a free night. Paid rates in June start at HK$3,000 ($386.97) per night, giving you a value of 0.77 cents per point — if you’re purchasing IHG points as part of this promotion, this would be a great redemption.
Cozumel is a popular cruise port, but the InterContinental Presidente Resort & Spa is a great spot for spending more time on the island. Situated on a half-mile of white, sandy beach, the property includes plenty of amenities for you to relax your cares away, including two pools and oceanfront spa huts.
This is a Category 7 property, requiring 40,000 points for a free night. Paid rates in June start at $258.24 per night, giving you a value of 0.65 cents per point. With the 100% bonus bringing the cost of IHG points to 0.575 cents each, you’re only going to save a fair amount by purchasing points, especially for longer stays.
