From now until late tomorrow night (February 4, 2015), Virgin America is offering select flights from $49 one way as part of its Follow Your Heart promotion. Additionally, the airline will donate $10 to the American Heart Association for each ticket sold. A few examples of routes included in the promotion are:
- Las Vegas-Los Angeles: $49
- Palm Springs-San Francisco: $59
- New York-Ft. Lauderdale: $89
- Los Angeles-Boston: $149
There’s plenty of availability for these discounted fares on the Virgin America website, with the $49 Los Angeles-Las Vegas route available on many Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from now through May. If you have travel planned on any of the selected routes, I’d look into booking during this promotion, since many of these fares are well below historic averages. The Boston- LAX route, for example, typically averages around $390 round-trip, but costs only $298 with this promotion.
Competitors have also taken notice, as American Airlines, United Airlines, and Spirit Airlines have matched Virgin America’s discounted fares on numerous routes. Alaska Airlines is even beating Virgin America in certain dates along the SEA-SFO route.
Aside from traveling frugally, these fares are a good opportunity to earn bonus travel rewards, since Virgin America is running a promotion that offers double Elevate points when you fly from now until March 31, 2015.
Tickets must be purchased by 11:59 pm CT on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Most routes require a 14-day advance purchase, with select routes requiring a 21-day advance purchase. All travel must be take place between February 17 and May 20, 2015. If you’re going to get in on these fares, do it sooner rather than later, as there are only a limited number of seats available. It's a stellar Cash Back card on its own, but when paired with the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred, the Freedom's 5x Category Bonuses let you rack up Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, transferrable to partners or redeemable via the portal.
