TPG reader Jim emailed me to ask:

“Do Delta Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) roll over? I’ve already qualified for 2015 Diamond Status. I have 140K MQMs and $17,000 in spending. The 15,000 MQMs roll over; what about the extra $4500?”

One of the unique aspects of the Delta SkyMiles program is that you can roll over your Medallion Qualifying Miles, which is a feature Delta introduced a couple years ago. It’s a pretty nice benefit to have, because it gives you incentive to continue flying Delta even if you’ve reached an Elite tier. No other airline has really matched them on this, which I find surprising, because you’d think airlines would want to encourage customers to keep flying even after they’ve qualified for a certain level of status.

Delta also has a lot of credit cards that offer MQMs, so this is a lucrative program for them, since it encourages people to spend as well. However, Delta isn’t as generous with MQDs, and the rollover feature is strictly limited to miles. So unfortunately you’ll have to start at zero on January 1, 2015, and complete the requisite amount of spending to qualify for elite status.

Unfortunately, Delta Medallion Qualifying Dollars don't rollover. Photo courtesy of Shutterstock.

Unless Delta decides to make a change (doubtful), you won’t get any credit for your extra spending. You’ll just have to amp it up in 2015!
