Premium transatlantic travelers are a hot commodity for airlines. Airfares are generally through the roof and the airlines have been doing their best to put their best lie-flat products on these routes (like Delta who is almost done retrofitting all aircraft to have lie-flat seats, like what I flew to Milan last summer and American Airlines who is retrofitting their 767 and 777 aircraft with lie-flat beds). To lure these profitable flyers, the airlines often run lucrative promotions to reward high fare class purchases and today American and British Airways both announced promotions where you can earn up to 100,000 miles in their respective programs for travel now through August 31, 2014.

You might as well register for these promotions, because it can’t hurt! You never know if you get re-routed or re-booked in an eligible fare class. I personally value AA miles more than Avios and that’s where my miles get banked because I’m requalifying for Executive Platinum status this year, though I’m not sure if I’ll be shelling out for any premium flights this summer since fares are usually pretty high. However, British Airways Premium Economy fares can be reasonable, especially if you upgrade with Avios, which is pretty cheap and does not require a co-pay like American (though will likely trigger higher taxes). American’s rules only state that you need to register before you fly (and they confirmed that via Tweet), whereas British Airways precludes travel booked prior. I’m curious if United/Delta will retaliate with their own versions- since airlines are copycats, I wouldn’t be surprised!
