Starwood’s launched its global summer promo today called Earn Away Get Away,” and you can register to earn double Starpoints on stays at participating hotels and resorts through July 31, 2014 and triple points on stays that include a Sunday night (Saturday night for hotels in the Middle East).

Starwood-Earn-Away-Get-Away
To be eligible for the promotion follow this link, enter your SPG number and email address and hit “Register” by midnight on June 30, 2014. You will be automatically be awarded with double or triple Starpoints for stays that fall within the promotion period of May 1, 2014 – July 31, 2014. Bonus points will post to your account within 2-4 weeks after the qualifying stay.

The bonus points are earned on the base points you would normally earn. As a member of Starwood Preferred Guest, you normally earn 2X base points per $1 spent so with this promotion you will instead earn 4X points per $1 on stays that do not include a Sunday (Saturday in the Middle East), or 6X points per $1 spent if a Sunday is included in the stay (Saturday in the Middle East).

Elite level members (Gold or Platinum) will earn the same 1X bonus point per $1 they normally would (75-night Platinums get 2 extra points per $1), and cardholders of the Starwood Preferred Guest Amex and Starwood Preferred Guest Business Amex who pay for their stay with their co-branded card will earn the extra 2 points per $1 too but no bonus above that. However, depending on your elite status and whether you have a Starwood Amex, you could be earning up to 10x points per $1.

One major downside is that there is a pretty extensive list of nonparticipating hotels and resorts that you can find here. There are almost 150 hotels on the list (over 10% of Starwood’s footprint) with some major blackout pockets like what looks like most of the high-end properties in New York City, as well as popular properties abroad like the W Leicester Square in London and both the W and Le Meridien in Hong Kong. So be sure to check the list before you stay.

While I’m not blown away by this promo, I do appreciate its simplicity, and it’s definitely going to drive some of my business toward Starwood this summer since, as a 75-Night Platinum and a Starwood Amex cardholder, I’ll earn up to 8-10x points per $1 on Starwood stays (though I might not use my Amex abroad thanks to its foreign transaction fees), which is just a phenomenal rate. In any case, it’s better than their current “Bring on the Nights” promo where you earn 2,500 bonus points for every 5 nights up to 20 eligible nights and 15,000 bonus points. Here at least you start earning with your first stay/night, and depending on the room rate, your elite status, and whether you’re a cardholder, your earning can be much higher.

In any case, don’t forget to register before June 30, and before booking any stays, make sure you will be at an eligible/participating property!

Excellent, my stay at the St. Regis Rome the first week of May qualifies. Thanks for the heads up Brian.

Poor promo with all excluded hotels. Sadly, my SPG points value continues to diminish.

  • Harry

Too many hotels are excluded and they are all in major cities. Seattle, Chicago, Silicon Valley and NY are out. Should never run a promo like that!

It says: Eligible Stays with at least one night in the earning period will receive a bonus. I’ve been staying at property since April 6th and have not checked out. I’m going to extend until May 3rd. Does that mean I will qualify for all 28 days triple bonus?

I second that – horrible promo whole cities are out. Like ALL hotels.
