Last week Orbitz announced the launch of its new loyalty program, Orbitz Rewards creating a welcome addition to the travel-booking sphere that should help consumers earn even more value back on their travel spending.

orbMembers of Orbitz Rewards will earn “Orbucks” based on the kind of travel they purchase.  Flight bookings earn 1% of the cost and hotel bookings will earn up to 5% of the amount paid. The program also includes a Refer-A-Friend feature that gives members who refer friends and family as well as the person they refer $25 credit.

On the heels of the program announcement I wanted to incorporate Orbitz into this week’s giveaway and award two winners with $1,000 in Orbucks and a round trip coach class flight voucher to Mexico/Caribbean ($700 in value) each. Since Orbucks can only be redeemed for eligible hotel bookings, the $700 flight voucher will allow the winners to book an entire vacation.

The Winners of Last Week’s 18,000 Avios Giveaway Are…

Last week I decided to award two lucky winners with 9,000 British Airways Avios because that’s the number you’d need for a short-haul roundtrip economy award thanks to BA’s distance-based awards formula. To enter you had to either leave a comment on the post with a great British Airways redemption for 9,000 Avios or leave a comment on my Facebook wall with the same information.

The following winner was chosen at random from over 300 comments that were left on the giveaway post:

JMS

“We are heading to London on Avios for Thanksgiving to visit family (I waited as long as I could for an Amex transfer bonus, but unfortunately booked before the 20% bonus offer began). Thanks to your advice, we’re flying on Aer Lingus and airberlin to avoid the huge BA and AA airport taxes into London. Now I need to get from Dublin to London (4,500 Avios) and London to Dusseldorf (4,500 Avios). Would love to have 9,000 Avios :-)”

I’m sorry you weren’t able to take advantage of a transfer bonus, but I’m glad these Avios will help you get around Europe!

Our random Facebook winner snuck in her comment on Monday afternoon just under the deadline:

Elyse Kelly
turk
“I’d use the 9k Avios for a roundtrip flight from MIA-PLS (Turks and Caicos!!) for a little getaway over the long weekend for Valentine’s/President’s Day Weekend. The cheapest flight right now from Fri-Mon is $556 so I think it’s a GREAT deal! Just look at that view…”

I’d have to agree with you Elyse, that view is very enticing and I wouldn’t mind being on one of those lounge chair right now.

Congratulations to the two of you, I hope you can put these Avios to use very soon and we will be in touch shortly to get everything squared away. Thanks to all who participated and be sure to enter this week’s comments for another chance to win!

  • Joseph

I would definitely go back to Cancun or Playa del Carmen!

  • Kevin P

My wife fell in love with the Gansevoort Turks and Caicos when we went for 2 days for a wedding.. so I promised to take her back (after too many margaritas). Flight + hotel packages on Orbitz in January are $4,700 for 4 nights! Would love any help I can get!

  • Brian

I would like to go down to Aruba. I’ve been there once on a cruise and wanted to spend more time there. The Hyatt Regency looks like a great place to stay.

  • Robert P

I’d take my family to the Turks and Caicos for Spring Break; use delta miles for two tickets, the vouchers for the other two and the orbit miles to find lodging on Grace Bay

  • Chris

$1000? I’d quit my job and spend 40 days in a siem reap hotel, specifically Golden Orange Hotel. If I really wanted to splurge, I could do a month at the Lotus Lodge because they include breakfast…

  • Becky

I’d LOVE to use the Orbucks for a roundtrip flight from ATL-STT (St Thomas!!) for a special surprise getaway for my husband – our one year anniversary celebration is in November! The Marriott Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort would be a perfect place to stay for a relaxing, romantic trip!

  • Michael

I’d go to Punta Cana for a week vacation with my girlfriend.

  • SSM

I’ve been procrastinating on a caribbean destination for our honeymoon next April, so I’d use it to book DR or Jamaica!

I would love to go to Cancun for 4 nights/5 days and stay at the new Hyatt Zilara all inclusive resort. Would use the flight voucher to get free flight tickets, and 1000 orbucks for 2 nights in Hyatt Junior suite king. Will get 2 more nights in Hyatt using Gold Passport points or from 2 free night certificates which I got from the Chase Hyatt card using your blog (big thanks for that!) Total cost: $0

  • Roman Goubin

I used my miles recently for a trip to Ibiza Spain and Panama city Panama. The value of the Panama trip alone was around $2000
I could really use a miles refill!

  • Andrew

Wedding, Hawaii, the most special vacation of all! Thanks TPG!

+1 for St Thomas! should be able to get 3-4 nights and flights for 2 if I’m flexible enough with my travel dates…

  • alex

I would love to use those points to much needed vacation in St. Thomas. I’d be able to spend the weekend there avoiding days off from work and would live it up with family and friends!

  • nrdk

I would head to the Caribbean with my girlfriend of 3 years, perfect to make a dent for a 4 day getaway in St Marteen or St Lucia ($2,800).

  • Robert

My girlfriend is celebrating her 30th birthday this year and what better way to celebrate than with a free trip to the Dominican Republic (St Martin). Reason for going… It’s been on her list for years and as a long time points-junkie I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity. This could be it!

I found roundtrip flights for a five day trip around her birthday for $788. I’ve always wanted to stay at the Radisson Blu Resort which, with a promo code I found online, will only cost me roughly $1000 for the entire run. Can’t beat that!

Help me surprise my GF with a trip we’ll never forget. I’ll send pictures of the planes overhead from Maho Beach!

    Robert

  • Jasanna

  • Brian

I would use this to go to Turks & Caicos. I’ve heard great things about it and it would be a great place to get away from the northeast winter!

  • Justin Brown

I would search for deals in South America for a first anniversary surprise for my wife. Neither of us have been to South America so this would be an amazing getaway and break from the cold weather in North America. Rio has a R/T from DFW for $989. I would try to leverage my British Airways Avios points that were transferred from my AMEX Platinum (including the 20% bonus) to purchase one of the two airline tickets.

  • khrivas

Congrats to the lucky two winners!

  • David

I’ll use the bucks to surprise my girlfriend with an amazing vacation on which I propose!

  • Tony Childers

My wife and I are expecting our first child in January and have always dreamed of returning to our Honeymoon destination in Mexico. Of course, with a baby on the way, that has made it difficult to save enough money and points to make that possible. We’d use the Orbitz points in combination with points transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards (my first time to redeem points!) to stay at the Grand Park Royal Cancun Caribe, or the new all inclusive Hyatt Zilara, both in Cancun.

  • khrivas

I would use Orbitz rewards and the miles to re-visit LIVE AGUA in Cancun if paying, it would be $3,324

  • http://www.airlandandsea.wordpress.com/ Jane

I NEED to get out of here during the winter so I would fly to Panama so see the engineering marvel of the Canal as well as viewing the new canal being built. If I flew out of RIC I would have to contribute $39 to the economy airfare but if I drove to RDU, I could fly business or, could take hubby in economy and we’d chip in the rest.

  • mark

  • Jorge

  • Shari Margolin

I’m dying to go to Mexico City! I’m typically a beach-vacation person, but I’m intrigued by the city culture, the food, and the sports. I’d love love love to go to a Lucha Libre match and check out the city’s bazaars. Flight from Atlanta and 7 nights at the gorgeous Condesa DF runs about $1,073 per person on Orbitz.

  • Mike

My wife has recently instructed me to plan a Caribbean beach vacation next year and further informed me to include her mother as a thank you for helping take care of our new baby. There are flights available next Jan/Feb from TPA to St. Thomas for about $270 each so the $700 voucher would just about cover 3 tickets (and baby flies free!). While the Ritz Carlton looks great, 4 nights at a more modest hotel would be perfect for the $1000 on Orbucks.

  • http://www.laviajeramorena.com/ Chanel @ La Viajera Morena

I would take a vacation to Bermuda from NYC and stay at the Grotto Bay Resort ($1300 on Orbitz: Hotel + Flight for 1 week). I would take this particular trip because it is not often that I actually ‘go on vacation’, I usually take adventures. I want to do something where I could just lay on the beach and soak up the sun.

My partner and I have been wanting to go to Puerto Vallarta for ages, but never seem to be able to make it out there. Coincidentally, Valentine’s day weekend 2014 is also President’s day weekend, so we’d use this prize for a long(ish) romantic getaway.

  • Dianna

I’ve never traveled anywhere south of the American border, at least on this side of the hemisphere, so I’d love to fly to Cancun sometime in Jan/Feb (looks like flights are currently going for ~$450 roundtrip). And then use I’d use the orbucks + my two free vouchers from applying for the chase hyatt card to stay at the newly renovated Hyatt Zilara!

  • Brian Beneke

Turks and Caicos to SCUBA with my long-time girlfriend! I’d stay at the Regent Grand Resort for a very reasonable $300/night for five nights. That means I’d only be out of pocket about $500 and $725 for the flight. It’s almost a two for one deal!

  • Uri

I would go to San Juan in PR

  • AZL

I’d go to mexico city and see the Teotihuacan nearby. I have a cate 4 certificate for a hotel and then do hilton for 3 nights. Total ~ $945

I would love to finally go to Ireland! I gotten my Irish citizenship because of blood relatives born there, but still haven’t visited! … looks like I can find flights for around the $600 range, with awesome hotels from the mid $100s. • Jons

My wife is pregnant, and we want to have our last TOTALLY relaxing holiday before the madness begins. Since we cannot fly anymore, we will donate the air tickets to someone who needs them.

We have already booked the train tickets, so all that is left are the hotels. Spanning three cities, the Omni in Providence for $179 for one night, the Vanderbilt Grace in Newport for $285 per night for two nights, and the Langham Hotel in Boston for $194 per night for two nights. This will total $1,137, but I do not mind paying a little extra for the comfort!

  • Joe Harris

I would use the Orbucks towards taking my wife on a tropical getaway for her birthday. Those extra dollars can let me step up the plans to the next level! Cabo San Lucas, all-inclusive resort w/airfare for 2 People = $2600 USD.

  • Charles

I’d visit Turks and Caicos with my boyfriend for a much-needed break from the NYC winter. The Regent there costs $300/night and flights are under $500 ai

My friends already have a week-long trip booked in Cabo at the RIU Palace (which also happens to be all-inclusive…). • mkm

I would probably put this towards a trip to Cuba. I have really wanted to go with my friend for a while now. Does anyone know about the mileage programs on Copa Air?

  • Lynn

I would go to the Fairmont Mayakoba Riviera Maya, Mexico where rooms are going for. $199/night. Why there? Because it’s cold in STL in the winter but warm there!

    Beutiful place- great diving.

  • Yehudis Lewis

I would use the Orbucks to go on a trip with my family to Israel

  • Sandeep B

Use the money for a 3 or 4 night stay at the Andaz in Maui and hope that elite benefits kick in.

  • Steve G

use the Orbucks for a nice trip in mexico or Maui

  • RomanHans

I’m a total foodie when I travel. I’d love to go to Oaxaca, Mexico, where $1000 Orbucks would buy me 12 nights at the Hotel Victoria Oaxaca and I could eat every color of mole that’s ever been invented.

  • Jeremy

I’d use the Orbucks for a week at Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino. It’s $168 a night and I have always wanted to go to Aruba.

  • dude26

I would go to an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana! found a great resort that would total at 988$ for 3 nights!

  • Chris

Found a great place in Ocho Rios, Jamaica! What better location for a Valentine’s weekend getaway with my wife? Less than $350 a night at the resort and we can use points for the additional airline ticket! #win

I would take my amazing girlfriend to Sint Maarten to sip Guavaberry as we watch the planes fly over us on Sunset Beach. Then, a ferry ride over to Saba, which I have read is one of the hidden jewels of the Caribbean. After a few days enjoying quiet Saba, we would hop a short flight to Nevis. I used to work in an Alexander Hamilton museum, and I’ve always wanted to see his birthplace (and climb Nevis Peak)!

I would use this award in my trip to Puerto Rico end of this year. I will spend it to redeem for hotel stays. Sheraton Old San Juan is the one I will be staying at. My trip budget for 2 is around $1800, in which hotel stays consume a large portion!

  • Brad

Just checked with the girlfriend. She wants Turks. So original. The trip has a budget of $1150. Turks is warm, fun, and romantic. It’s an easy trip from Mia. It’s a new relationship for us, so no better place to begin memories.

  • Danegal

I would go to St. John, USVI for 3-4 days for some much needed relaxation. Who doesn’t want to sit on the beach in the Caribbean? Our budget would be around $2000. Keeping my fingers crossed!

  • Chris

I would take my wife for our anniversary to Cabo doing all the water sports and fishing…spending $2500…

  • Natasha M.

I just payed off my student loans and I’d love to celebrate in the Bahamas with those wonderful Orbucks and my best friend on a beach! I would really like to stay at the Wyndham Nassau Resort, which would be about $2,000 and then find a great flight deal for around $500 pp.

  • Daniel

I’d take my wife and daughter to Los Cabos and try out a nice hotel there. Estimate cost for the three of us will be around $2,500. My wife keeps telling me that Cabos is on her bucket list, so it would be a nice surprise if we could finally make it happen.

  • Deneetro

I would use the Orbucks to stay at the new Hyatt Zilara all inclusive resort in Cancun, which is about $375 a night.

  • Chelsea

I would visit a dear friend that moved to Mexico recently. She lives in Guadalajara, so I would love to visit her there and then head to Puerto Vallarta and use the Orbucks for a nice girls’ weekend at the beach.

  • bmp412

I already have a trip to Maui in February to go hiking, I’d use the points to book the nicest place i could find for the last night before flying back!

  • Lita

I would finally go to Mexico City and stay at the Room Mate Valentina; $1000 in Orbucks would give me about 14 nights there. I like to stay in one place for a while, pretend I live there, and really feel into the culture. I have a good friend in Mexico City, and it would be a lively, historically and culturally interesting place to explore and to improve my Spanish. The total cost to me, with food, transportation, and other expenses for two weeks, could easily be less than $500!

I would go to Grand Cayman with my husband so we could attend the Cayman Cookout and meet my travel/food inspiration Anthony Bourdain (and Eric Ripert too!). Booking the hotel and flight together on Orbitz would cost $1,991.82, saving $320.76, for a 7 night trip! Being able to use the Orbucks and flight voucher to cover most of the cost would allow us to afford tickets to quite a few events at the Cayman Cookout.

  • howaaman

I would take a trip with my husband to Alaska. We enjoy outdoor activities, and we haven’t been there yet. The cost would be around $1500.

  • Colin

I’d go to the Caribbean with my girlfriend, she’s graduating this year and it’d be a nice surprise since I otherwise wouldn’t be able to do it. I’d be able to use the award to book one of the flights for free and defray most of the cost of the hotel, so it’d probably only cost me $800 or after the rewards, definitely doable!

  • Robby

I would fly from Denver to Saint Maarten (a little over $600) and watch a 747-400 land right over the beach and eat a burger at Sunset Beach Bar. Being an airplane nerd, that is totally on my bucket list! I would stay at the Royal Palm Beach Resort (well reviewed on Orbitz) for 5 nights which would cost a little over 900 bucks and would save the extra and do a special night out somewhere with my wife.

  • Stephanie Gossett

I signed up as a new member, and it looks like an amazing program. I would take my husband to the Bahamas, and stay at the Graycliff hotel and restaurant. The trip would cost around $1,897 total. The voucher and points would make that total drop! There are so many ways to use this and have a great trip! My husband wprks two jobs, and took in my two little girls, saving us from an abusive first marriage. He works with troubled youth, giving them a second chance at life. We have been married ten years and never had a vacation. This would make a vacation attainable for us! I cannot imagine winning! This will be a dream come true for someone! Thank you for introducing me to this rewards program!

I have used Orbitz for a while, but the new improved Orbucks look incredible! I would take my boyfriend to the Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica. We have always wanted to go to an all inclusive, but couldn’t afford it. Not to mention this would make a great graduation present for us! The airline credit would pay for most of our AirTran tickets (and since Orbitz’s allows you to earn rewards for your airline rewards program this trip would allow me to finally receive a free round trip airline credit!). The $1000 Orbucks would be used to pay for the all inclusive hotel for 3 nights. Right now, since Orbitz has a coupon code to save $25 if you book through the app, we maybe able to stretch it in extra night, especially because Orbitz’s has an early booking bonus for this hotel right now. Not to mention we would save $176.13 for booking flight and hotel together (that sounds like a couples massage for us). Going to Jamaica has always been a dream and this would be absolutely amazing! Thanks for the small chance to win!

  • derek

I would take my lovely girlfriend on trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands. I’m hoping to put the spark back into our relationship and this would definitely do it! I would maximize the prize by booking a cheaper hotel for six nights. The total cost would be around $2000.

If I don’t win this, then I hope you do!

I would take my wife to Puerto Rico, and indulge in the local cuisine! (pork baby!) Cost would be around $2000
