I love my Chase Ultimate Rewards points and I mostly use them to transfer to United or Hyatt for great values on travel redemptions such as my first-class ticket on Lufthansa or a suite at a Park Hyatt or Andaz. However, one of the more fun benefits of the Chase Sapphire and Chase Sapphire Preferred cards is access to Chase Sapphire Exclusive Experiences just for cardholders, who can either pay cash or redeem points for unique events and packages not available to members of the general public.

After offering VIP football experiences for Jets and Giants fans earlier this month, the latest Chase Sapphire Preferred exclusive experience is the chance to attend the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Tickets went on sale today (October 9) at 11 am EST and they tend to sell out for Sundance, so if this is something you’re thinking about, better get in quickly.

Chase Sapphire and Chase Sapphire Preferred cardmembers get access to pre-sale and exclusive packages to the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, which is running from January 16–26, 2013 in Park City, Utah.

Sundance

Sundance Festival runs from Jan 16-26 in Park City, Utah.

As a Chase Sapphire or Chase Sapphire Preferred cardmember, you also have access to purchase Sundance Film Festival Passes and Ticket Packages before they are released to the public. The Sundance Film Festival Passes and Ticket Packages Pre-sale is on October 10 at 11 am EST through October 10 until 6 pm ET, click here for details. In addition to pre-sale tickets, cardmembers have access to the Priority Box Office Line, VIP Parties and Dining Concierge and during the festival.

Note that the packages must be purchased using Ultimate Rewards points associated with a Chase Sapphire or Chase Sapphire Preferred account or with your Chase Sapphire or Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Each package is for two people who must be 21 years or older.

While none of these deals are cheap, I’m thinking about attending Sundance and hotels are hard to come by, especially the first weekend, which my industry friends tell me is the must-attend time for the festival.

Is It Worth It?
As always, it depends on what you want to get out of your points. Speaking strictly in terms of cash value, getting 1 cent per point in value is not a great redemption in my book since I can get a lot more monetary value from premium travel redemptions.

However, though the “price” Chase puts on these packages equates to 1 cent per point, often the value of these packages are much higher, as my Conde Nast Traveler Gala package in September 2012 demonstrated.

For that same reason, it might make sense just to pay for these packages in cash if you are interested in buying one of them and calculate just how much buying all the individual components would be and then find that the package cost is less overall – plus take into consideration that you’ll be getting into events and parties you wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

For example, the Hotel Park City where you can stay for 5 nights with this package is already sold out during many of the dates of the festival, though room rates during the rest of January are going for $499-$799, so even at the lower end with room rates at about $600 during the festival, you’re already getting $3,000 in value from the package just on the room. Then if you add in Ticket Packages for the Day One events and parties as well as additional screening tickets, you’re looking at anywhere from $1,000-$3,500 depending on how many events and screenings you want to attend, so if you plan to go all out and maximize the access you get with this package, you could really be saving some money.

Just remember that if you have multiple Chase cards, you’ll need to go through Sapphire or Sapphire Preferred to get access to these events because those are the lifestyle cards and they’re the ones sponsoring them. Remember, if you have a Freedom, Ink Bold or Ink Plus card, though, you can always transfer points from those into your Sapphire or Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card account to redeem for these.

As always, do the math and make sure the value you’re getting out of your redemption makes sense for you and your needs.
