Here’s a recap of the interesting points and miles news from this week:
30% Bonus On Shared American AAdvantage Miles: Now through October 10, 2013, American Airlines is offering up to 30% bonus when sharing miles. You’ll receive a 20% bonus when sharing 5,000-25,000 miles; a 25% bonus for sharing 26,000-40,000 miles or a 30% bonus if you share 41,000-50,000 miles. To share miles there is a fee of $20 per 1,000 shared miles for the first 5,000 miles, then $10 per 1,000 shared miles for anything on top of that plus a $35 transaction fee. If you need to top off an account, this is one way to get some bonus miles, but I wouldn’t recommend sharing miles just to do it since those bonus miles will be costing you over 3 cents each, even in the best circumstances. There is a maximum of 100,000 shared miles per account per year (bonus miles do not count towards this).
Enter To Win This Week’s 50,000-Point Thursday Giveaway: This week’s Thursday Giveaway is for 50,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points – more than enough for two nights at top Hyatt properties around the world (they’re only 22,000 points a night for a standard room) or 10 nights at a category 1 property! The 50,000 point bounty wasn’t pulled out of thin air, though. It is the amount of points you can earn with Hyatt’s newest promotion, “Discover New Possibilities,” where from September 9 – November 30, 2013 you can earn up to 50,000 bonus points. You can enter by uploading a 15-second video on your travel inspirations to your Instagram account hastag your video #TPGTravelInspiration. You can also upload it to sites like YouTube or Vine and include the link in the original post.
Earn 1,000 Bonus Starpoints at Select Latin America SPG Properties: Now through November 30, 2013, you can earn 1,000 bonus Starpoints when staying at new Starwood properties in Latin America. The properties include the Sheraton Tucuman Argentina, Sheraton San Jose in Costa Rica, Sheraton da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil, Aloft Cancun, Aloft Panama, Four Points Miraflores in Lima, Peru, and Palacio del Inka in Cuzco, Peru. To be eligible for this offer, you must book a two night stay online, or by calling and mentioning rate plan LATINSUN. The bonus points should post 4-6 weeks after check-out. If you were thinking of heading to Latin America, definitely check out some of these new hotels.
Update: This offer expired on October 29, 2013. View the current offer for the Business Gold Rewards card.
New Amex Business Gold Rewards Bonus Category – 2X Points On Computer Purchases: Earlier this week, American Express made a big announcement this morning regarding the Business Gold Rewards card. In addition to the current bonus spending categories of 3 points per dollar spent on airfare, starting September 16, 2013, cardholders will also earn 2 points per dollar on purchases made at select computer hardware, software, and cloud computing providers. Currently, this card is offering a limited-time bonus of
50,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $5,000 in 3 months and the annual fee of $175 is waived the first year. You can view the full details in the original post.
Earn Triple Amtrak Guest Rewards Points with Enterprise: Now through March 31, 2014, Enterprise is offering customers triple Amtrak Guest Rewards points on their next rental. To qualify for this offer, you must book online or by calling 1-800-261-7331 and mentioning customer #AMGRTRP. With this offer, you will earn 150 Amtrak Guest Rewards points per day on rentals, instead of the normal 50 points per day. The bonus points should post within 4-6 weeks after your rental.
Earn Bonus American AAdvantage Miles with AAdvantage Shopping: Now through September 30, 2013, American is offering customers the chance to earn bonus AAdvantage miles through their AAdvantage Shopping portal. You’ll earn an additional one-time bonus of 2,000 miles when you spend a minimum of $35. These are in addition to the normal AAdvantage miles you would earn through their shopping portal as well as your credit card miles, so you are essentially triple dipping with this promotion. The purchases can be from different merchants so you can mix and match your spending to meet the spending the thresholds. Keep in mind; the bonus miles can take 8-10 weeks to post.
Earn a Free Night after Two Stays with Choice Hotels: Choice Hotels just launched their new fall promotion, where you can receive a free night after any two stays through November 13, 2013. To be eligible, you must register before your first stay. The free night is actually a points bonus, which will bring your total points haul from your two stays to at least 8,000 points (which is their lowest award level). You will be awarded the difference between what you would normally earn on your stay and the 8,000-point redemption level, and a minimum of 5,000 points will be earned regardless, so depending on how many points you would normally earn on your stay, that will determine how many bonus points you will earn. They had a similar promotion back in the spring, which was also a bit confusing in my opinion.
Receive a 25% Bonus When Transferring Hotel Points to British Airways Avios: Now through October 15, 2013, when you convert your hotel points to British Airways Avios, you’ll receive a 25% bonus. Their hotel partners include Club Carlson, Hilton HHonors, Hyatt Gold Passport, IHG Rewards Club, Marriott Rewards, Shangri-La Golden Circle, and Starwood Preferred Guest. Depending on which partner, there is a minimum amount of points required to transfer so keep that in mind if you were looking to just transfer a few to top off your account. Allow 4-6 weeks for the bonus Avios to post. I personally wouldn’t transfer my hotel points to BA just to do so, unless I had a specific redemption in mind. As a reminder, British Airways Avios is a 1:1 transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards as well as Starwood Preferred Guest, which will give you a 25% bonus on 20,000-point transfers as well, so you have other options for topping up your account.
Norwegian Announces New Boeing 787 Routes from US to Scandinavia: Norwegian Air is planning to launch new service from Los Angeles, Oakland, and Orlando to Scandinavia aboard its new Boeing 787 aircraft, as well as a new flight between New York and Copenhagen. The new routes are expected to begin in the spring of 2014. Currently Norwegian offers six weekly flights between New York to Oslo and Stockholm, and plans to offer service from Ft. Lauderdale to Scandinavia later this year as well. Earlier this week, British Airways announced new service between Austin to London, which will begin in March 2014 on their brand new 787 aircraft as well. Check out my post Top 10: Ways You Can Fly The Boeing 787 to see some other ways you can get onboard these new aircraft.
