American Express made a big announcement this morning regarding the Business Gold Rewards card: in addition to the current bonus spending categories of 3 points per dollar spent on airfare, 2 points per dollar spent on US purchases of advertising in select media, shipping and gas stations, starting September 16, 2013, cardholders will also earn 2 points per dollar on purchases made at select computer hardware, software, and cloud computing providers.

Here is the complete list of approved vendors:
Apple
CDW
Dell
HP
IBM
Intuit
Lenovo
Microsoft
Newegg
Oracle
Rack Space
Sage Software
Salesforce.com
Symantec
Tiger Direct

Although the offer states that this bonus category is for select Business Gold Rewards Cards, I received confirmation from Amex that this is NOT a targeted offer and all current card members will be eligible beginning September 16th.

Currently, this card is offering a limited-time bonus of 50,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $5,000 in 3 months and the annual fee of $175 is waived the first year.

To read about great ways to maximize Membership Rewards points and why I find them so useful, check out my Top 10 post on reasons I like Membership Rewards cards, but one of the major reasons is the program’s numerous transfer partners, giving you the ultimate flexibility when redeeming your points. The program’s 21 airline and hotel transfer partners which include:

Airlines
Star Alliance:
Air Canada Aeroplan, Singapore, All Nippon Airlines
Oneworld: British Airways, Iberia, Cathay Pacific
Skyteam: Delta, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Alitalia, Aeromexico
Other: Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, El Al, Frontier, JetBlue, Hawaiian Airlines

Hotels
Starwood 3:1
Hilton 1: 1.3
Best Western 1:1
Jumeirah 23:1

Double Dip Opportunity

Some vendors offer bonus points or miles when shopping through a portal like American AAdvantage eShopping, Delta SkyMiles Shopping and the Hilton HHonors Shop to Earn Mall, so you should always check EVreward.com and compare how many points/miles each portal is offering and double dip by earning not only 2X points with the Amex Business Gold Rewards card, but also multiple points/miles per dollar at each merchant.

Looking at the list of new vendors for the Business Gold Rewards card, here are some of the current big bonuses that I found for these new Amex bonus merchants on EVreward:

Intuit (Quickbooks)
Choice Privileges– 5 points per dollar
Hawaiian – 5.5 miles per dollar
United – 650 miles
Delta – 700 miles
US Airways – 700 miles
Southwest – 900 points
American – 1,100 miles
Priority Club – 1300 points

Symantec
Priority Club – 12 points per dollar
American, Amtrak, Choice Privileges, Hilton, Marriott – 11 points/miles per dollar
Southwest – 9 points per dollar
Hawaiian – 7.5 miles per dollar
US Airways, Delta – 7 miles per dollar
United – 6 miles per dollar

Dell
Amtrak, Choice Privileges- 6 points per dollar
Marriott – 4 points per dollar

My Thoughts

I think it’s great that Amex is improving this product, which is its gold standard business credit card, but I’d still like to see something as lucrative as the 5X bonus spending categories that the Chase Ink Bold and Ink Plus have at office supply stores and on telecommunications. Still, with 3X points on airfare, and 2X points on advertising, shipping, gas and now various computer hardware, software and tech solutions, this card just became more lucrative, and with its 50,000-point sign-up bonus and first year’s annual fee waived, it remains one of the most solid business credit card products out there.

The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN

Though the Business Gold Rewards card doesn’t have the benefits package of the more premium Business Platinum Card, it also doesn’t have that card’s $450 annual fee. In fact, the $175 annual fee on this one is waived the first year, so getting it is like a risk-free trial of its benefits plus it comes with appealing bonus spending categories like 3x on the category of choice and a range of 2x spending categories as well.
