Starwood announced its summer Double Take Promo a few weeks ago, and registration is now open. From May 1 through July 31, 2013, you can earn double Starpoints on all eligible stays at over 1,000 properties as well as 500 bonus Starpoints for booking through the chain’s mobile site or app.

Registration is now open for SPG's summer promotion: Double Take.

Registration is now open for SPG’s summer promotion: Double Take.

Here are the details of the promotion:

-Earn double Starpoints on all eligible stays (doubled points are base, not elite, so you get 4x base points plus any elite/credit card bonuses).
-Earn 500 additional bonus Starpoints for stays booked at through the spg.com mobile site, the SPG App for iPhone or the SPG App for Android.

The double Starpoints will be based on stays from May 1 through July 31, 2013. Here’s a list of the non-participating properties (quite a lot) for this promotion. However, the booking bonuses are eligible for all Starwood hotels and resorts that participate in the SPG program, regardless of whether or not the hotel is participating in this promotion.

Overall, this is just an okay promotion in my book. I’m still going to keep Starwood as my primary chain because I like the Platinum benefits, like suite upgrades, free breakfast, free internet and the (iffy) YOUR24 ability to check into hotels 24 hours a day. However, I’d consider other chains if any actually launch lucrative promotions. So far this year things have been pretty boring on the hotel promo front, though.

Terms and Conditions:

Registration: Members must register online at spg.com/doubletake by June 30, 2013, midnight Eastern Time (ET). Registered members can earn bonus Starpoints® for every eligible stay between May 1, 2013 and July 31, 2013 (the “promotion period”), at more than 1,000 participating Starwood hotels and resorts. A list of non-participating properties can be found at spg.com/doubletake and is subject to change.

Earning: Registered members will earn double Starpoints on eligible stays at participating properties during the promotion period. Members who earn double Starpoints will earn an additional two Starpoints per eligible US$1 spent (for a total of four Starpoints per dollar). Elite-level extra Starpoint earnings and other bonuses will not be doubled. Only the base two-Starpoints-per-dollar earnings are doubled. There is no limit to the number of bonus Starpoints that can be earned during the promotion period.

Bonusing: Bonus Starpoints will post to the registered member’s account within 2–4 weeks after the qualifying stay posts.

Mobile Web/Mobile App Booking Bonuses: Registered members are eligible to receive 500 bonus Starpoints for completed stays during the promotion period that were booked through the spg.com mobile website, any Starwood hotel–branded mobile website, or any SPG mobile app (see the FAQs for a specific listing of eligible mobile web and mobile app channels). Bookings made prior to the promotion period are eligible, but only eligible stays consumed during the promotion period will receive bonuses. Registered members may earn a maximum of 500 bonus Starpoints per booking. Booking bonuses will post to the registered member’s account after the end of the promotion period. Booking bonuses are eligible at all properties that participate in the SPG program, regardless of whether the property is participating in the SPG Double Take promotion.

Eligible Stays: An Eligible Stay is defined as one or more consecutive nights paying an Eligible Rate in the same hotel regardless of the number of check-ins or checkouts that occur and post to the member’s Starwood Preferred Guest® account. Eligible Stays with at least one night in the earning period will receive a bonus. An Eligible Rate is any rate that is eligible to earn Starpoints in the Starwood Preferred Guest program. A description of SPG-participating hotels, and resorts and of Eligible Stays and Eligible Rates, can be found at spg.com under Terms & Conditions of the SPG program. See Section 1.4 b iii for the complete definition of Eligible Rates, but note that certain prepaid rooms, where the booking is made through a third party (including but not limited to travelocity.com, expedia.com, orbitz.com and delta.com), are not Eligible Rates and do not earn Starpoints or qualify for promotional earnings.

Qualifications and Starwood Terms: All promotions are subject to the Starwood Preferred Guest program terms and conditions, which are subject to change without notice and can be found at spg.com. Thanks for this. Do you know for what reason there are always many “non participating” hotels with offers like this?

  • Robby

Is it fair to say then that SPG Gold (3-points per $) will now earn 5 points per $?

  • Tom

In the Flyer Talk thread on this promo, the Starwood Lurker II has said that multiple rooms at the same hotel do not qualify for the promo. At first he said none of the rooms qualify, then he reversed himself and said only the first room qualifies. I don’t see this anywhere in the T&C or FAQ. What are your thoughts on this? Is there a way to get a definitative answer from Starwood?

  • Lookcle

    I have the same question.

  • thepointsguy

That’s correct, base points are doubled.

  • lookcle

how about if I pay with the SPG credit card and I am SPG Gold too?

  • thepointsguy

Then you get 2x for Starwood Amex spend and 2x base gold/plat points plus 2x for promo

  • thepointsguy

Hotels have to pay for the points so if they feel like their occupancy is high enough they won’t participate

How has the latest point devaluations by Starwood, Hilton, and Marriott affected your opinion of each? Can you elaborate on why Starwood is your “primary chain,” and how the devaluations of points at Starwood, Hilton and Marriott has either strengthened or weakened your feeling of preferring Starwood.
