Virgin America recently started flying from Newark to Los Angeles and San Francisco and as a way to lure customers away from United and American, they’re offering some roundtrip fares for $99 one-way, $198 total roundtrip!

$99 Newark to LAX!

$99 Newark to LAX!

Travel Sept 3rd – October 30th and depart on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday.
This works in both directions, so you can depart from Newark or Los Angeles/ San Francisco. This also works for one-ways as well.

United and American have both matched and apparently the sale ends tonight so book now if you want in! These are some of the lowest transcontinental fares I’ve seen in a long time.

To search for available dates I used the ITA calendar matrix and found available dates- many are still available then you can go to your preferred website and book. Check out this post for the best ways to maximize airfare purchases.

United will let you cancel within 24 hours and AA lets you hold for 24 hours, so at a very minimum book now and finalize your plans tomorrow.

So this is what, 3,000 miles each way, so 6,000 miles for $198? or 3 cents per mile? Any bonuses you can stack on top of this?

  • Robert

Is it really worth for a mileage run while the same 6000 miles will cost $225.75? Barely $30 difference will not cover the cost to get to and from the airport or the parking space and the same airport, not to mention the food for purchase.

If you use Sapphire UR, it will cost 16000 UR and then you will get your 6000 United Miles plus any elite bonus. Not bad.

thank you, thank you == live in LA and need to be in Phila for a wedding on Oct 20. Just got the tkt for 197.80 == thank you

I don’t see any availability on American. Lots on United and Virgin.

I agree, AA does not appear to be matching

I searched for AA availability after this post went live. I Did find availability, however a short time later I checked again and nothing!

SFO-JFK is between 2,579 and 2,586 miles depending on the carrier, so SFO-EWR would be slightly shorter (about 20 miles) and LAX-EWR is a bit shorter than that (being east despite being further south). So, you’re looking at roughly 5,000 miles.

  • AJ Mazza

Booked! LAX-EWR , $197! Love it! Same day turn around, 45 min layover in Newark, then back on to head home. Literally leave 8am and return at 8pm. Can’t beat it for 5,000 miles….

I don’t think this fare qualifies for mileage earning. :(
