I was recently approved for the Mercedez-Benz Platinum Card from American Express and earned 50,000 Membership Rewards points after $1,000 in spend within the first 3 months.

My 50,000 Membership Rewards points posted on 3/31.

I had an existing Platinum card when I applied and was approved, so this just goes to show that you can get the Mercedes-Benz 50,000 point sign-up bonus, even if you have an existing Platinum card.

Does it work the other way? I’ve got the Mercedes Benz Platinum card, but if at some point a lucrative regular Platinum Card offer comes out, will I b eligible to apply for that card while I hold the Mercedes Benz Platinum card?

  • misspaintalot

So why does the description say “Earn 25K Membership Rewards® points after you spend $2,000 during your first three months of Card membership”
    but you got 50K miles?

  • Robert

must be a new offer with a smaller bonus :)

  • Thomas

The $200 airline credit: is that on a yearly calendar? So you could get $400 before the annual fee comes up? Also does that credit work for gift cards (and what airlines if so)

  • andrew

Why the 2nd Platinum card? Were you basically buying the points for the annual fee since you already had the benefits?

  • mbcca2300

    misspaintalot,

That is because the ad beneath the article is for the Amex platinum, not the Amex MB Platinum.

For TPG, did you cancel your other Amex platinum? What was the timing (before the application of the MB, or after)?

  • AAmex

Can the MB Amex Platinum be chipped like the standard Platinum can be?

  • ballardFlyer

That offer is the normal platinum card – not MB plat

  • ballardFlyer

I did MB Plat when I already had regular Plat too – worked like a charm.

  • zila

    and so did I.

  • shonuffharlem

Yah I don’t get it. However, I don’t have a Platnium – so basically its like a fee rebate and I get the benefits for free right?

  • zila

yes, at least it worked for me

  • thepointsguy

I canceled my original Platinum a couple days after receiving the Mercedes-Benz card. The rep completely understood why and didn’t even ask me to keep both

  • thepointsguy

Because I got a prorated annual fee back on my first and had already used the $200 airline credit. With the new $475 card I get 50,000 points plus another $200 in airline credits. 50,000 Amex points at $275 is about half a cent per point. A steal since I value Amex points at about 1.8 cents each, plus I get a ton of other value from the card like lounge access

  • thepointsguy

Calendar year so you get a new $200 on January 1 of every year

  • thepointsguy

50k is only for Mercedes-Benz Platinum (linked in the first sentence). 25k is the regular Amex Platinum offer.

  • thepointsguy

All depends on the restrictions on the offer that you apply for. Currently the regular Amex Platinum 25k offer states “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any Consumer ZYNC®, Green or Gold Card account within the last 90 days.”
    So you should be fine

I also did this on your recommendation and made 1 purchase, paid the bill and the points were in my account in 2 days! Very great service. I also got my $100 gift certificate for a Mercedes Benz car or to be used at their store.

  • Brian L.

    Yes.

  • LT

This is the disclaimer/footnote text when I go to apply for the card,it seems like they are saying it’s not valid for existing platinum card holders:

Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months. You can earn 50,000 Membership Rewards® points when you spend $1,000 in your first 3 months of Card membership. To be eligible to earn points, you must charge your purchase on an eligible Platinum Card® from American Express exclusively for Mercedes-Benz. Points will be credited to your Membership Rewards account within 6 – 8 weeks after the spend requirement has been reached. This offer is not valid for existing Platinum Card members from American Express. You are eligible to receive points for only one Card account. Additional Card members are not eligible.

  • thepointsguy

Have you had the Mercedes-Benz Platinum? If so you can’t get the bonus. If not, then you can. Regular Amex platinum is not “this product”

  • Carl

how long has this restriction been in place? Amex does not want to give me the 50k bonus for the PRG, as i already have a Plat card. I don’t recall seeing this in the application back in February and i am very careful about checking T&Cs.

  • LT

I have a regular Amex platinum now but no Mercedes-Benz Platinum. But if you click on the number one footnote on the application page for Mercedes-Benz Platinum card you get what I pasted. The second to last sentence states “This offer is not valid for existing Platinum Card members from American express”. It may just be a systems loophole that has not been closed yet that is allowing the bonus to go to current regular Amex platinum card holders.

  • thepointsguy

It may say that but I got the points and so have many others

Will it matter if you have the Gold card and apply for this one?
I really wanted the Platinum Card, but the contraindications for the Gold card prevented me from applying. I was going to cancel the Gold card anyway… so I may just apply for this first… then cancel the Gold. The fee is due in May.

  • thepointsguy

Can’t see why it would- the only exclusion stated on the app is that you can’t get the welcome bonus “if you’ve had this product” within the last 12 months. No exclusions on other cards and I had an active Platinum open when I applied and still got the 50k after a couple weeks

  • NotPleased

Just because something is automatic and they won’t catch it (or aren’t likely to) doesn’t make it not stealing. I have no idea why people who seem to be otherwise decent can’t grasp this.

Now I know who to thank when the $200 fee refund is gone or severely restricted…

  • Tom

Does your Mercedes Platinum card have the same “Member Since” date as the Platinum card you canceled a few days later?

Silly question, I know I know… but I like that my card says “Member Since 02″ : ) Thanks

  • thepointsguy

Yes- I actually inquired about that and they made sure :-)

  • thepointsguy

Huh? What is stealing? Amex has clear rules about who can get the bonus/rebate. They read my site. Nothing here is even remotely against the rules. I think you may be misreading/ misunderstanding the post

  • Tom

    Haha, you rock!

It looks like I’ll be switching to the MB Platinum after I use up my $200 airline allowance on American in a few weeks. Thanks!

  • Francisco C

I dont see any mention of the $200 calendar year benefit for airline reimbursement. Is this not a perk of the Mercedes Benz Platinum card? Am i confusing it with the AMEX platinum? thanks

  • netro

Can you pay a bill like a mortgage or does it have to be a product? What did you purchase for $1000?

  • thepointsguy

It is a perk- I already registered my MB platinum w airline choice

  • BostonBen

I had the Amex Platinum, applied for the MB Amex Platinum, cancelled original Amex Platinum after receiving MB Amex Platinum, received prorated credit for Amex Platinum, made $1000 of purchases with MB Amex Platinum, and then received 50,000 MMR. This whole process took only two weeks, and it probably would have been quicker if it didn’t take me an entire week for to spend the $1000. Thanks TPG for the advice!

  • TimmyD

TPG – in the comments you mention that you are essentially paying $275 for the 50K points because of the $200 airline credit, but you also note that you can get the $200 credit each calendar year. Doesn’t that mean that this card is really only charging you $75, since you should get the $200 credit twice?

Also, are people still having success using the $200 credits toward purchasing AA gift cards, or is there a better way to use the credit?

And finally, other than the promotional points, is the only difference between this card and the regular platinum that you dont get the global entry pass plus the fee is $25 more? The various club accesses are the same, right?

  • AndreLaplume

Brian – I just received an offer to upgrade from Gold to Platinum for 25k points. Think I can upgrade to MB Platinum after that for another 50k?Any guess as to how long this offer will remain alive? Thanks!

  • Buckaroo

for the MB card, if you cancel after 3-4 months, you get a pro-rated refund right?

  • Rob

When one uses the annual $200 benefit for the airline gift card, can you buy them online at the airlines web site or is it best to go to the airport and make the purchase there? I know the purchase has to say on the AMEX statement that it was made from the airline but is there any fine print “no online purchases”?

  • thepointsguy

Mortgages will usually charge a fee, but that would be fine. Balance transfers do not qualify as spend (usually)

  • thepointsguy

I will have gotten $200 credits twice in 2013 and another jan 1 2014.

The card lounge access program on bit cards is the same. Same as other benefits except the Mercedes specific ones that only come with MB card

  • NO

If you cancel an existing amex platinum to open the mercedes one, does that automatically cancel your priority pass select membership? I’m assuming then I’ll have to sign up again for priority pass once my mercedes card arrives?

  • Marc

TPG I recently got the Amex Platinum when the January 100k deal was offered in Jan 2013. What type of prorated annual fee back can I expect?

    Has the spend requirement changed?

    It now says –

50,000 Membership Rewards® points after you charge $3,000 in purchases
in the first three months of Card membership.

  • thepointsguy

    Yep it’s now 3k

Do you get a calendar year bonus for $15,000 yearly spend like the other Amex Platinum cards?

  • Morgan

can you still get the MB AMEX platinum if youve had the regular platinum in the past 12 months / 90 days
