New Year, New Look

You might have noticed a new look on the site today. I haven’t changed the site in the last couple of years, so for 2013, I decided to refresh it and add some new features. There is a lot of great information on the site that is buried in the archives so we are going to be working hard to organize it so that you can find the content you’re looking for faster.

I’ll still be sharing the same great content every day. This is just the first phase and we’ll be testing it out over the coming days, so there might be some hiccups here or there, and if you see something let us know. As always, I welcome your feedback.

    You should bring your old header banner back in some form. It was very creative. The new style looks like any other travel blog or site. Too generic.

    Looks great. It would be very helpful to have a session with “Travel Guides” including all comments from readers about places to visit, restaurants to eat, etc… for each city as well as your own comments about places you visit.

    Some food for thought: The previous site seemed much better in terms of design. This one lacks the charm of the version before—you just should’ve updated the new functionality to the old design. I feel this one is harder to read, and, it looks like any generic blog right now.

    I like the new layout as far as organization goes, but I do miss the boarding pass header as well!

    Brian,
    It looks nice, but I thought the boarding pass was very creative and I view it as part of your brand. Though I read most posts through Google Reader, there is something sentimental about the boarding pass header. Your blog was the first points blog that I started reading and the fact that you had that header set you apart from the others. It conveyed style and class.

    Looking very good! I also like how you added Disqus comments. You should fix your RSS feed title while you are at it. It’s presently still (title unknown)

    I think the font size on article titles is a few points too large.

    The top CC deals in the upper right are misleading. For example, the BA offer is 50K initially + 50k bonus = 100k total. The AAdvantage and Ink cards are actually 50k each – you only get 100k if you apply for 2 cards. If you want to display it this way, figure out a way to clarify this up front before people click the link for more info.

    much better indeed . also better use of the width . I used to always have to manually maximize this website to make fill the blank space on both sides.

    Looks good in Firefox, but the formatting doesn’t seem to work in Safari.

    Setting the width of the #content_box attribute to 1158px fixes the layout issue for Safari. You would need to add the following code to your stylesheet:

    #content_box { width: 1158px;}

    looks great! i totally ignore the right column, however. could less real estate be dedicated to that?

    I like it. the white background is cleaner and easier to read. Lots of people fear change. As evidenced by the comments.

    not sure i like the redesign. it looks like a wall of text, no pictures. its less likely to engage me. I liked how the old design displayed the 2 newest articles without having to click a link. and of course the old banner was was better.

    I like this more but I still don’t like how you split off into multiple columns after the first few posts on the homepage? What’s the point? It’s not as natural for the eye to go back and forth and then down to the next row, when it could just keep going down row after row of articles. Besides, it’s taking up the same amount of total space!

    Brian– I definitely miss the old boarding pass header– I always thought of it as a signature design element that was directly connected to you and your blog. In addition, there is something about the white background of the new design that looks very generic. I think I miss the old gray as well!

    Change always takes some getting use to. One recommendation: Can you make it so that search results are sorted by date posted? Searching for generic keywords like “Delta Skymiles Redemption” caputures dozens of posts and it would be easier to navigate them by date. I’d rather read about the most current redemption first and then go through the older ones. (And yes, I agree with everyone else, I like this site but I miss the boarding pass header.)

    I actually prefer the white background because it makes things much easier to read, especially the “TOPICS” column on the right. The old “blue on blue” was a bit difficult.

    The old and new designs look fine to me on a full-size screen, but both have been difficult on an iPhone (on both a 3GS and a 5). Perhaps I’m not seeing the option to switch to a “mobile view.” I continuously appreciate your content, but if I could have a more readable version for a small iOS device, that’d be great.

    Like the new look, but I have to agree with my fellow posters; bring back the board pass banner. Thanks for the all the timely and valuable information you and your team has provided this year and in past years. I wish you continued success and look forward to learning more in 2013.

    I tried to give this new design some time, just to be sure that wasn’t just resisting change, but I’m still not liking the big, bold helvetica headlines. They feel like they’re screaming at me, almost like all caps. I think they need to be a little smaller, a lighter, less contrasty color like gray or a bold version of the serif body text.
