I recently wrote about Avis American bonus offers that are good until August 31, 2012 and I just wanted to remind people that this is a pretty incredible offer. To get the miles and discount use coupon code MUAA035, which gives 3,000 miles for rentals of 1-2 days and 5,000 miles for rentals of 3 days or more. Save up to 35% with Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number K817165.

My Experience
I’ve rented from Avis twice in the past week and actually found the AWD number to drastically reduce the price of the rental – even from Priceline’s lowest rates. The coupon code is only good at airport locations, but it’s available on most car classes, including convertibles and SUVs. However, Cool Cars are prohibited, which was annoying on my last rental because the Cool Car rates were the same as full-size and I’d much rather have a BMW X3 than a Kia Optima! However, I was still able to rent the full-size and talk my way into the X3, so it is possible to have your cake and miles too.

Additionally, Ultimaterewards.com is currently offering 3 extra points per dollar for Avis purchases and you also get 2x points when paying with your Sapphire Preferred card, since rental cars are classified as travel.

Current Ultimate Rewards car rental earning ratios

My $100 two-day rental netted me: 3,000 American miles and 500 Ultimate rewards points. I value both types of points/miles at 2 cents each at least, so getting $70 back in value on a $100 rental is pretty good! There are definitely ways to work this promotion by getting super cheap one-day rentals, though you have to factor in the time it takes to actually go and rent the car since you actually have to drive off the lot (usually) to get the miles.

I believe you have typo, Ultimaterewards.com is currently offering 3 extra points per dollar for “Avios ” purchases, i think you mean Avis purchases

    Fixed-Thx!

As usual, compare the rates for three day weekend rentals with rates after using a “buy 2 weekend days, get one free” coupon. These coupons are widely available for virtually all rental car agencies. On a cheap weekend rental, go for the points. But, on an expensive weekend rental, the free day might be worth more than 5,000 AA miles.

I just tried to book an Avis rental using the AWD code and it quoted me the exact same price without using any discount codes. Has this worked for everyone else?

  • AceTracer

It only works at airport locations apparently. At least that was my experience.

  • Monique

Thanks! I was actually trying to use it at an airport location but it didn’t make a difference in the price using the code. Perhaps it’s certain airports.

  • thepointsguy

Good advice- always do the math to make sure you aren’t paying more for the points than they are worth

  • Michaelboddicker

If I book through the Ultimate Rewards site, how can I ensure that I will also get the 5,000 AA miles? Thanks!

Which is better, UR or TopCashBack?

  • Mae

Well since it’s 3 UR vs. 5.5% TopCashBack … what do you value more?

  • thepointsguy

    UR for sure

  • Solo3

You can make the reservation then edit to include AWDs/CC

  • Justin

Is there anyway to avoid the under the age of 25 surcharge of $27 a day?

When going to the Avis site through Ultimate Rewards, there’s already an AWD number or Rate Code pre-filled (G833700). Is that required in order to get the Chase 3x points per dollar, or should I replace it with your AWD number K817165?

  • Cowbear_others

    1) i don’t see where to edit? is it in UR website or go to avis website?
    2) avis.com has “pay now” option that’s 20% cheaper than regular rate (with the AWD)… but then will lose the UR points if don’t book thru UR website. how to choose? thx.

Are you able to earn the Sapphire Bonus points going through the Avis website, if you use the same codes?

  • thepointsguy

    Yes

  • WJB

Goin to try m first 3-day rental from SFO this weekend…5k American miles will be awesome! When and if they post…

  • Ken Mahadeo

Just tried signing up for a 10 day rental in Great Falls International Airport. Seems the above mentioned codes do not work. Please advise.

  • Ken Mahadeo

Got it. Saving money is so much fun. You’re the man Brian. Works when you book via American Airlines or calling Avis directly. Not the case on Avis.com. The coupon codes didn’t work on Avis.com. Avis representative added an additional coupon worth $30 off the price. Also got upgraded for free. C’est Bon!

how long does it take the points to post to AA.com?

  • NotFF

Anyone noticed Avis charges a fee to earn AA miles?

  • Judy H

The AA website link says 750 bonus points for 3 days not 5,000. Has the offer changed and is no longer available for 5,000 points?
