I recently wrote about Avis American bonus offers that are good until August 31, 2012 and I just wanted to remind people that this is a pretty incredible offer. To get the miles and discount use coupon code MUAA035, which gives 3,000 miles for rentals of 1-2 days and 5,000 miles for rentals of 3 days or more. Save up to 35% with Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number K817165.
I’ve rented from Avis twice in the past week and actually found the AWD number to drastically reduce the price of the rental – even from Priceline’s lowest rates. The coupon code is only good at airport locations, but it’s available on most car classes, including convertibles and SUVs. However, Cool Cars are prohibited, which was annoying on my last rental because the Cool Car rates were the same as full-size and I’d much rather have a BMW X3 than a Kia Optima! However, I was still able to rent the full-size and talk my way into the X3, so it is possible to have your cake and miles too.
Additionally, Ultimaterewards.com is currently offering 3 extra points per dollar for Avis purchases and you also get 2x points when paying with your Sapphire Preferred card, since rental cars are classified as travel.
My $100 two-day rental netted me: 3,000 American miles and 500 Ultimate rewards points. I value both types of points/miles at 2 cents each at least, so getting $70 back in value on a $100 rental is pretty good! There are definitely ways to work this promotion by getting super cheap one-day rentals, though you have to factor in the time it takes to actually go and rent the car since you actually have to drive off the lot (usually) to get the miles. Even after the introduction of the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is still a fantastic choice if you want to avoid the Reserve’s $450 annual fee, earn 2x on all travel & dining and earn a 50,000 point sign up bonus.
