Delta launched a promotion where when you register any eligible American Express Card and use it to book a ticket on Delta from any U.S. city to San Juan, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo or Santiago, Dominican Republic with a value of $300 or more between August 20, 2012 and November 15, 2012 with all travel completed by December 1, 2012, you will receive a $50 American Express Gift Card.
Details of the promotion on the American Express website.
In addition to an eligible American Express card (see the list below in the T&C), you will also need a Delta SkyMiles number to register. American Express Gift Cards will be mailed out 6-8 weeks after the promotion ends. It says you needed to receive the offer directly, but it allowed me to register and even sent me an email confirmation confirming my enrollment. , so you might as well sign-up – even if you’ve already booked a trip because you never know if they may include your itinerary as eligible. It can’t hurt to try!
I searched for some flights and found one from Los Angeles to San Juan via New York-JFK for $317, so it would qualify for this offer. With the $50 Amex gift card, the trip costs only $267 and you would earn 8,144 MQM’s which comes out to 3.3 cents per MQM – not a bad deal considering that both of these destinations are upgrade eligible routes with a fairly low amount of elite members flying them, so your chances to get upgraded to San Juan or the Dominican Republic are pretty good. With the lack of any Delta bonuses this year that yield MQM’s, this can be a good way to rack some extra miles up.
