TPG reader Mark asks a question many of us have been wondering:
“Do you have any idea when another deal will come out where you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Delta SkyMiles and receive a bonus such as the deal posted last summer?”
The short answer is: not that I’m aware of. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been been a transfer bonus from Amex Membership Rewards to Delta miles since a 30% rebate last November that expired on December 31, 2011. To my knowledge, there have been no public Amex-Delta transfer bonuses in 2012, which is the longest lag I’ve seen in a long time.
Will they bring one back? Your guess is as good as mine, but my gut says there will be one eventually. Why the drought? Earlier this year there were rumors of drastic changes to the SkyMiles program, so maybe Delta doesn’t want to run any transfer bonuses because they don’t want to provoke Amex customers who transfer large amounts of miles during a transfer bonus and then all the sudden change the program on them. That happened last fall with the Avios changes November 15 that were initiated overnight without any advance notice.
I also think American Express was running promos like crazy last year to take away from the fact that Continental left the Membership Rewards program on September 30, 2011, and they were trying to build as many loyal Delta flyers as possible (hence the multiple MQM promos). Maybe it worked and now they are trying to normalize the ratio so they don’t have to keep giving away the bank? But rest assured, if there is a bonus, I’ll be writing about it here, so stay tuned! With some great bonus categories and an annual fee that’s waived for the first year, the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card has a lot going for it. If you don’t have PRG, now’s as good a time as any to add it to your wallet, as Amex added some great new benefits several months back.
