If you are unaware or haven’t paid attention to Priority Club PointBreaks, you should. They allow you to use a measly 5,000 Priority Club points (which transfer 1:1 from American Express Membership Rewards - note that relationship ends June 30, 2012 and Chase Ultimate Rewards). Historically I haven’t taken advantage of them too much, but this all changed last month when I was asking sage TPG readers for advice on Phnom Penh, Cambodia and someone reminded me that the Intercontinental was on PointBreaks. The night I needed was available on PointBreaks (you book them like normal award rooms at PriorityClub.com), so I got a room, which was upgraded to a Club Room due to my Royal Ambassador status, for only 5,000 points – vs paying $180. The PointBreaks room included tax and lounge access (full breakfast and afternoon drinks) so I practically felt like I was robbing the place with the value I got out of the award.

This round is pretty decent, with a number of Intercontinentals available – including the Intercontinental Mauritius, which I thoroughly enjoyed last summer. I have a friend who is going to Bucharest in a couple weeks and was initially looking at the Radisson Blu (to obviously take advantage of the 50,000 point promo), but is now going to spend most of the time at the Intercontinental for only 5,000 points a night since the Radissson only requires a single night stay for the bonus. He doesn’t even have a Priority Club account, but he does have a bundle of Chase Ultimate Rewards from his Sapphire Preferred and Ink Bold cards, so he was able to instantly open a Priority Club account here and then transfer the points needed for his stay. In this example, 3 nights in June would have cost $406, so his 15,000 Ultimate Rewards points each saved him 2.7 cents a piece. Not bad for a hotel redemption using points.

Intercontinental Bucharest for 5,000 Priority Club points a night

$406 for three nights at the cheapest refundable rate

Note: You can also “buy” Priority Club points using the Cash & Points method I outlined in #7 here, but note that they recently increased the cost per point to .7 cents per point, thus making each PointBreaks night only $35.

i have 819 points, and want to book a room for 2 nights (10k). when i click book room, it says “you may book a stay that combines 0 points and $40 cash per night to make up the difference” but when i click that, it just brings me back to the previous screen. any advice how to go about booking that?

  • http://twitter.com/jesuisxtc x†c

transferred in 5000 points via amex, so now i have 5819 points. again tried to book points & pay $40 for the 2nd night. they won’t let me online or over the phone, and so you can’t get the points for .7 cpp. the only option is to buy the points in 1000 increments for $13.50 each, which is $67.50 for the night. just bought them as i had already spent 5000 MR points to get this far, and $70 for the $100 room isn’t all that bad.

Hello, thank you for this information… seeing that this promotion ends in July… Do you know if they will run this again? My husband and I will be going to SE Asia for 7 weeks, and would love to capitalize on an offer like this… but obviously this one expires! :)

  • Jon

xtc – you would have had to book points & pay on a DIFFERENT (non-PointBreaks) hotel that offers that as a valid option. You would then cancel the reservation, which would credit the points that you just purchased back into your account. This is documented on several blogs, and I would guess that TPG covered it in the past. Just something to keep in mind for the future :)

  • JMSL

Can you let me know how long it takes for your purchased points to post? I am beyond frustrated trying to get 5000 points into my PC account so that I can “purchase” more points via the Points & Cash option. I haven’t been able to link my MR account and PC accounts via the Amex website and the phone reps haven’t gotten anywhere.

  • JMSL

I should mention that I broke down last night and bought 5K PC points, as it’s still cheaper than paying rack rate, but the points still have not posted (~24hrs later) and I’m getting nervous the properties I want to book will sell out of PB rooms.

  • Lark

If I want a list of every damn hotel particpating in a certain promotion, I check Loyalty Traveler! :)

    Quit cluttering up TPG…

  • Andrew

Actually you are missing some. For example, in theUS the hotels in Mass and NY are not listed.

  • Sean

Hey bro!! that “someone” who referred you to the IC in Cambodia was loyal reader Sean in San Diego

  • Jeffrey

After the same frustration, I figured it out. To take advantage of the loophole you have to:

    1) Have AT LEAST 10,000 points in your account (that is the min amount you can book using cash + points)
    2) When you have 10k points search around for a hotel with availability, but not a hotel that is on the 5,000 point promo
    3) Click button to book using 10,000 points + $70
    4) Finish booking, it will say that you are purchasing $70 worth of points (10k) immediately and only the points can be refunded upon cancellation, not $
    5) After you reserve, click to cancel. You should see your point value double from 10k t0 20k
    6) There you have it, you just added 10k points to your account for $70

You can repeat again and again to rack up a bunch and then book the 5,000 point promo dates. Just remember to give the system a few mins between transactions to fully update or you might get errors about not having enough points!

  • Angry Andorran

how did Andorra make it to Central America? did Spain and France sell it for cash?

  • B.H

The IC Bucharest is really a good deal for 5,000 points….Booked 2 nights in July.

  • Tom

Okay, I have to tip my hat to TPG.

As a ten-year Flyertalker with elite status in multiple alliances going back to the 1990s, I considered myself pretty savvy, at least in airline programs. But a few months ago I started subscribing to your blog. In addition to some other offers, I picked up the PriorityClub Visa 50,000 point signup bonus, quit banking my PC points to Delta and saved them in PC instead. Next thing you know I’m alerted to this points break special.

I cancelled ~$300 worth of reservations in Long Beach and used 10,000 points for two nights at the Crowne Plaza in San Pedro, across the river. Okay, not a top drawer hotel but no worse than what I had already booked. Value = 3¢/point.

Then I remembered that I was booked at the Crowne Plaza by Copenhagen-Kastrup airport for 25,000 points in July. A quick check on Point Breaks and sure enough the hotel is available for 5,000 points. Cancel old reservation, book new one, and I’m 20,000 points richer.

So basically I’m $300 and 10,000 points better off thanks to this promotion, which I never would have taken advantage of if it weren’t for TPG. Thanks!

  • Tom

    Actually I heard they did a Points+Cash deal ;)

Thanks TPG! Had Holiday Inn St. Petersburg (Russia) booked with points+cash, cancelled and got Staybridge for points, upraded as plat PC to upper floor suite. Both are brand spanking new properties ajacent to each other, convenient to metro, nice city views, breakfast included (even w/points reservation). Recommend to anyone who is headed there.

  • thepointsguy

Nicely done! I’m going to Copenhagen soon and debating whether to Pointbreak it or do Radisson Blue for the 50k.. maybe I’ll do both!

  • Heather Adams

I’m confused. I went in to make a reservation at the the Crowne Plaza Los Angeles Harbor Hotel and it’s not listed among the California offerings.

  • TPG Intern Ryan

    Thanks for pointing this out.

On the Priority Club site, it mentions, “Offer and participating hotels are subject to change at any time, valid for booking through July 31, 2012. Reward night terms and conditions apply.” so possibly this hotel is no longer participating.

Take a look at the most up to date list on the Priority Club site.

    Hey Points Guy,
Thanks for the helpful hints and advice. Any idea when the next Points Break list will be published? Current list expires end of July ’12 and I thought they usually publish next list in advance. Perhaps IHG is reconsidering this program?
