This should be an interesting week for me. I’m going on the third annual Star Mega Do, which is an event planned by frequent flyers, for frequent flyers. The event is co-organized by certain Star Alliance member airlines, as well as Hyatt. There are two portions (full schedule here), and I booked business class tickets on both. I will be live tweeting on my adventures, so make sure you follow me on Twitter! I’ll try to get some blog posts up from the road as well. You can also follow the official Facebook page with links to live tweets/videos, etc.

Portion 1: The European Adventure, $2,500 for business class
Highlights:

Monday: Fly JFK-Frankfurt on Lufthansa. (On the A380, which will be my first A380 experience!).

Tuesday: Connect Frankfurt-Munich to check out Lufthansa and my special tour is with the LSG SkyChef facility. I have to wear a hair net in order to go on the tour – just wait for the pictures/video!

Wednesday: Fly Munich-Frankfurt-Chicago and meet up with the full group.

Portion 2: The North American Charter Jet Adventure, $1,800 for first class. I’ll be joined by TPG reader Kathy who won the Great Seatmate contest.

Wednesday Continued: Hyatt reception at the Park Hyatt Chicago. One of the gifts from Hyatt is Diamond status for all attendees, which will extend my current Diamond until February 2013.

Thursday: United Airlines session at O’Hare and then get on the 757 charter and fly Chicago to Montreal. Meet up with the Aeroplan folks.

Friday: Bombardier tour in the morning and then fly Montreal to Denver.

Saturday: I bid for time in the United Flight Simulator and will be going on a brewery tour with the Grand Hyatt Denver staff later in the day. The event ends with a charity dinner.

It should be a really fun and interesting week. Are any other TPG readers going on either portion of this trip? Let me know!

Is this a by-invitation-only event? How does one score an invite?

    Newbie wants to know:
are business class prices listed because that’s what you paid,
or because you’re demonstrating what your ff miles-points covered?
Did those miles-points also cover cost of event & lodgings?
    regards

Awesome.. the trip has been great so far, though I’m a little delirious right now in the Frankfurt Senators lounge..we arrived at 445am and the lounge didnt even open until 530! Off to Munich we go…

Flag me down.. I’m 6’7″, so pretty easy to spot!

Thats the price I paid- it was discounted for the trip. I’ll do a recap with all the points/miles I earned and final costs (and whether I thought it was worth it) when I’m back.

I ate at Alinea last year.. amazing, right? I liked it better than French Laundry

Enjoy! I really liked flying the A380…such a smooth ride

Initial report: good, but I found the service to take FOREVER. They did back to front and I was in the front and I didn’t get a glass of wine until I was done with my meal. Nice crew, but I think the cabin is too big for them to service quickly. Seats were standard angled lie flat- nicer than KLM (which I’ll be posting about soon)

TPG, see you in Chicago! I’ll probably be the youngest asian guy there haha.

Sounds great – looking forward to hearing about your progress!

I flew FRA-SFO yesterday on the A380 – business class. Quite disappointed in the hard product to be honest – seat was uncomfortable, not sure if it was because they’re new and not worn in – but for the life of me I just could not get comfortable. I was dog tired following LAX-ICN-HKG-BKK-MUC-FRA in the space of 3 days, but could only grind out about an hour’s sleep yesterday.

The soft product was so-so too; but I had been spoiled LAX-ICN (OZ F), and HKG-BKK-MUC (TG F) but perhaps unfair to compare as I was in business and not first on LH.

I’ll be interested in your assessment too. Safe travels TPG!

Expectations were low, because I knew it was an angled lie flat. However, I was able to get about 3 hours of sleep (though I could probably sleep while standing when I’m tired enough and take a little Lunesta). The plane is a beauty, but Lufthansa business is just okay

Are there any SkyTeamers who are talking about doing something similar on that alliance?
