American Express recently came out with a toolbar that alerts you to deals whenever you visit a website that offers a bonus when you use your American Express card. For example, when I go to Apple.com, a box pops up that I’ll earn 4x Membership Rewards points for using my American Express card at the Apple store online. Nice.
American Express offered a 10,000 point sign-up bonus to some people for installing the toolbar. I didn’t get the direct communication – I had installed the toolbar in May – but this week I decided I’d ask for the points (to be honest I had forgotten to follow-up). Hey – it never hurts to ask!
I can’t guarantee this 10,000 points will work for everyone, but since it’s free to download Insite, it can’t hurt to try. You must have a Membership Rewards linked American Express card to be eligible (for example Platinum, Premier Rewards Gold, Gold, Green)
First, download the toolbar here.
Then ask for the points via a secure message:
Americanexpress.com -> Contact us (top right hand corner) -> Online – Email us a secure message
I sent a quick message stating that I downloaded the Insite toolbar and I never got the bonus. The same day, I got a response that asked me when I downloaded the toolbar. I didn’t remember the exact date, but I said May 15, 2011.
I immediately got a cheerful response:
“Dear TPG,
Thank you for confirming the date.
I apologize that you have not yet received your 10,000 points; though, 8 weeks have passed.
Please do not worry. I have gone ahead and issued 10,000 points to your account.
Currently you have xxx available points and xxx pending points.
I hope I have met your expectations with this email.
We value the relationship built with you and we look forward to provide you excellent customer service that you truly deserve.
Have a great day ahead!”
Great customer service indeed! This is a prime example of why I am a loyal American Express customer. Not only do my charge cards give me the spending ability I need to run a small business, the customer service is unparalleled. And let’s be real – the bonus points opportunities are unbelievable. Beyond all of the bump bonuses and specials, Amex often runs transfer bonuses to airlines at up to 67%. So not only can you earn valuable Membership Rewards points at crazy rates, you can transfer them into airline miles at enhanced ratios as well.
Overall, 2011 has been one for the record books in terms of bonus point opportunities. I don’t want it to stop!
