I love getting reader emails – especially when they are success stories. I was corresponding back and forth with TPG reader Bill and I was delighted to get a confirmation of his upcoming trip. I thought it was a great demonstration of getting in on the top deals and then getting the maximum value of those hard earned miles and points.

“Hey Brian - I got it done.

Business/First Class all the way through except for the very last flight from MSP to DSM (about a 45 min flight).  120,000 Skymiles each for my wife and me accumulated mostly through the AMEX Platinum card bumped to 100K and transferred to each of our Delta accounts with the 50% bonus for each of us learned about on your site.

Des Moines (DSM)- Washington Reagan (DCA) Delta first

Shuttle/Taxi to IAD

Washington Dulles to  Paris (CDG) Air France business, 3 day stopover

CDG  to Seychelles (SEZ) Air France business, 4 days at destination

Seychelles to Paris (CDG) Air France business

Paris to Minneapolis (MSP) Delta BusinessElite

Minneapolis to Des Moines (DSM) Delta coach

I chose DCA on the outbound because I can fly non-stop to DCA to/from DSM where I would need to connect somewhere to get to IAD directly.

3 nights in Paris at the Park Hyatt Vendome using the points transferred to Hyatt from the Sapphire Preferred card that I saw on your site, 4 nights at the Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort using HHonors points I’ve accumulated over the years.

All this for $494 in taxes on the flight.

Simply amazing.  Really appreciate the blog!”

Well done, sir! Enjoy Seychelles and the Park Hyatt Vendome- I did some writeups from my trip (using Delta miles as well) last summer.

That’s tremendous. You offer such an invaluable service, Brian. I’ll be in NYC in a week and would welcome the opportunity to buy you a round of drinks…

Love to hear success stories! Would love to see this become a regular feature. It’s great inspiration for those of us in the planning process. Happy travels to Bill and his wife!

Great success story specially with Delta skypesos. BTW, since the AMEX platinum card comes with $450 annual fee (not waived) and so that needs to be added to the overall cost.

If the reader wants to save some money, take Metrobus 5A from Rosslyn to IAD. It’s only a few bucks and usually faster than a taxi because they can take the HOV lanes on 66.

This is nice. We have a similar trip lined up next month that I just booked a week or so ago. YUL-CDG-MRU, 5 nights in Mauritius at the Grand Mauritian, then paying our own way to go MRU-SEZ then four nights at Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove, then SEZ-CDG-YUL. What I like is it will all be on different planes, AF 747, MK A340, HM 767-300 and then AF A380. All in biz of course and there are four of us. 480k miles plus the starwood points/free resort nights for the hotel.

and trying to decide between asia (with ke) or south africa (with af) for next year’s spring break. sky “pesos” indeed….!

Congrats on your great trip planned, whats dates are you traveling, and were you able to book all this via their website or did you have to call and use a rep. Thanks again for all the great advice on the site.

  • Bill

Thanks! We are going next spring. I did have to call in because the SEZ flights are actually flown by Air Seychelles which is a partner of Air France. Delta.com didn’t have access to Air Seychelles flights.

  • Bill

I’m definitely going to look into that. Thanks for the tip.

  • League

Sweet! My husband and I live in DSM too and are just now getting into the mileage game. Paris is our favorite city and we’re looking into Seychelles for a future trip too.

Meh. Subtract $200 for the easily harvestable fee credit and you are at $250. Make yourself 20 adult beverages over the year at the sky club and u r ahead vs airport bars.

Sprinkle in 50-100k MR pts depending on your chutzpah level and it’s a great deal for the card for sure for the first year, espec vs delta Amex reserve (IMO).

Bill, that’s really impressive and sounds fabulous.

As a low roller travel-wise, I was feeling pretty good about myself having booked my wife and I LAX-Paris for 2 round trips on AA coach off-season (mile saaver) + $194 total taxes using my 80,000 Aadvantage miles from the citi promotion. And currently working on the chase sapphire preferred promo for which I thought the best deal was to convert to priority club points to use with the $40 co-pay with 10k points/night at a holiday inn express for most or all of the trip. But after reading this post I feel just a hint of buyers remorse, like maybe I could have done better if I had just applied myself.

Ok, not quite. We still have my wife’s 80k AAdvantage points to use on another trip, which might get my entire family to Florida sometime next year. As an infrequent traveler who can rarely find seats when I am able to use them (namely weekends during my daughter’s school vacations), I’d almost always take 2 trips in steerage over 1 trip in business class.

If anyone has any ideas on how best to stretch the sapphire points for hotels in Paris (or better yet, a chateau in the Loire Valley or somewhere else within driving distance of Paris), I would be interested to hear them. We are going for a week and the hotels there are crazy expensive. The exchange rate is about $1.50 or worse, but the euro seems to have as much buying power as 50 cents where I live.

Everything that I look at via Air France on Expert Flyer has to go through Mauritus to get to Seychelles. With the Mauritus to Seychelles leg always being filled. Am i searching correctly?

    Hi Bill,

I called Delta last night to book the same itinerary (leaving from JFK) and was informed that I could not use Delta points to get to the Seychelles. How did you do it?
