I generally don’t advocate buying miles outright, but when there are big bonuses it can make sense for certain people.
From now until March 31, 2011, Delta is offering a 50% bonus on purchased and gifted miles, up to 60,000 total (90,000 with bonus).
60,000 miles costs roughly $1,700 and you’d receive 90,000 miles. 100,000 miles can get you business class to Europe/South America, so if you were going to pay several thousand for a revenue ticket, this could make sense (especially if you have at least 10,000 SkyMiles in your account).
Even if your award isn’t available at the “low” level, you can usually get JFK-LAX/SFO for 80,000 miles in business class, which can be purchased for roughly $1,550. $1,550 for that flight in BusinessElite is a pretty good deal, though keep in mind you don’t earn any elite qualifying miles on award tickets, however Gold/Platinum/ Diamond Medallions are eligible for upgrades on domestic coach awards.
I won’t take advantage of this offer because I have enough SkyMiles, but it might make sense for those looking to top up for an award- especially since the bonus miles usually post instantly (or within 24 hours).
Transaction must be completed between February 1, 2011 and March 31, 2011 to receive the 50% mileage bonus. The 50% bonus mile offer expires at 11:59 CST on March 31, 2011. Offer does not apply to miles transferredthrough the SkyMiles Transfer Miles program. Bonus miles for Buy Miles transactions will be awarded to the purchaser’s SkyMiles account. Bonus miles for Gift Miles transactions will be awarded to the Gift Mile recipient’s SkyMiles account. The 50% mileage bonus will post within 24 hours of purchase. This program may not be available in all markets or geographic areas. Buy and Gift Miles may only be received into SkyMiles accounts that have been established for at least 10 days and have earned at least one mile since enrolling in the SkyMiles program. Please refer Delta customer service representative to offer code 97061236.
Miles may be purchased for $0.028 USD per mile (minimum 2,000 miles) plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax. An additional 5% GST and/or other applicable taxes apply to purchases by Canadian residents. Purchased miles are not refundable and are applicable toward all SkyMiles awards. Purchased miles do not count toward Medallion® or Million Milerâ„¢ status.
Tip of the hat to TPG reader Anna for this one!
