American Express is running a 15% transfer bonus when you transfer points to Virgin Atlantic from now until February 28, 2011 (US Membership Rewards members only).
I personally find Virgin Atlantic to have such ludicrously high redemption fees and taxes, that I think it makes sense to book Virgin Atlantic awards through other American Express partners such as Continental and ANA. However, if you have an existing Virgin flight that you want to upgrade, using Virgin miles may be your only option. In that case, if you are going to transfer anyway, you might as well get the bonus.

Promotional Terms and Conditions: Membership Rewards points transfer requests to Virgin Atlantic that occur between 1/3/11 and 2/28/11 will be eligible for the 15% bonus mile offer. To be eligible to receive the bonus Flying Club miles, the Flying Club account must be active and not in default at the time of the bonus fulfilment. To redeem the offer, you must transfer Membership Rewards to your linked Flying Club account between 1/3/11 and 2/28/11. Minimum transfer is 1,000 Membership Rewards points. Bonus miles will be posted to your Flying Club account within 14 days after the transfer. Offer is valid for all US Membership Rewards enrollees and subject to the Terms and Conditions of Virgin Atlantic Flying Club programme.
